Turner likely on his way out; 49ers offense likely to suffer
RealFootball365.com, AZ - 4 hours ago
Turner has made no effort to hide his desire to take over the Cowboys' gig, telling reporters on Sunday that being the head man in Dallas would be "a great job." Considering Turner has strong ties with newly hired offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, it looks like there's a realistic chance he'll become the next head coach in Dallas. (it also doesn't hurt that Turner helped win two Super Bowl championships while working under Jimmy Johnson in the early '90s).

If Turner does decide to leave San Francisco, Alex Smith likely will suffer the most. He made significant strides in his second season, occasionally showing flashes of the talent that made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, all under the tutelage of his Turner. If his coordinator suddenly leaves the fold, Smith's maturation process will be stunted.

Fortunately for the 49ers, Smith will still have quarterbacks coach Jim Hostler by his side in 2007. Hostler has been Smith's primary instructor during the first two years of his career, and should continue to be so in year No. 3, but it would be ridiculous to think Turner's departure would not adversely affect Smith's development.

Re: Norv Turner

If Turner does leave, will Mike Nolan promote Hostler to replace him?

Cool Re: Norv Turner

Does it really matter? Here's the offense: Give the ball to Gore.

Him leaving the 49ers could really hurt the development of Alex Smith. I want to see Turner stay in San Francisco because I think he can make something out of Smith, whom I thought was going to bust. However, Smith still has a lot of work to do if he wants to reach his potential and being under the tutelage of a quarterback guru goes a long way in helping his progression. Take away that guidance, and who knows what befalls Smith.

Re: Norv Turner

I agree it would be best for Smith's development if Turner stays, but there must be other good QB coaches out there and it will be vital for the 49ers to hire one. In the Debartalo years they had a way of finding these guys: Walsh and Holmgren in particular, who really played a big part in developing Montana and Young. They have too much invested in Smith (both monetarily and in terms of credit with the fans) to fail to find another, similar coach, should Turner leave.

Well, now we don't have to worry about Norv leaving, he is staying put after Dallas annownced that Wade Phillips will be their Head Coach. Thank Goodness for that.

Yeah, but... isn't it only a matter of time? He's still with the Niners this year, but there will be more openings next year, and eventually, you'd think one of them would go to Turner.

It's not exactly a stellar record Norv Turner has as a head coach. I truly think that Norv believes that he cannot make it as a head coach, but can be absolutely brilliant as a coordinator.

Re: Norv Turner

Well, it just goes to show you how much I know about my football team! He goes to the Chargers to be the Head Coach! That just SUCKS! I can't really fault the man for wanting to go to somewhere to be in the Big Chair, but to leave after such a promising season last year really blows. I guess I can write off the Niners for a few years to come now!

I wouldn't get too upset about it. They have good young players with talent. They will be fine with whoever is calling the plays

Re: Norv Turner

Funny how things work out. Norv Turner was in line for the Cowboys head coaching job, but that is awarded to Wade Phillips. In turn, The Chargers job that was to go to Wade Phillips went to Turner instead. Funny how things turn out.
