Trevor Hoffman Biggest Blown Save

Hoffman with a two run lead in the 13th inning couldn't hold it. His fastball at one point was just 86 mph. All he had to do was get three outs against the top of the Rockies order and the Padres would go to the playoffs once again.

Instead, he gave up a double to Kaz Matsui. Rookie of the year candidate Troy Tulowitzki hit another double to score Matsui. Matt Holliday belted a triple to tie the game. Todd Helton was intentionally walked.

Next batter up, Jamey Carroll. He lined out to right field and Brian Giles who threw home for the play at the plate. Holliday scored and game over.

This is Hoffman's fifth loss on the season and his second blown save in three days. Ouch.

Re: Trevor Hoffman Biggest Blown Save

Hoffman has literally choked in every one of the biggest spots he has has ever been in, World Series vs Yankees, All-Star Game, and now this. Please don't anyone ever mention him in the same breath as the game's greatest closers. I don't care what the numbers say. Also, was anyone surprised that Jorge Julio gave up the go-ahead home run?

Sad to say, but legend's right. Hoffman has the great numbers, but he never comes through in the clutch. Hard to defend him after last night.

Does he even have a "signature moment" that is positive?

Outside of breaking the saves record, I'm hard pressed to think of one.

Re: Trevor Hoffman Biggest Blown Save

I do have to give him credit though, he took his medicine like a man with the press afterwards. He said he was responsible for the loss and it would be a burden he would have to live with. Howeverm having said that, San Diego was going nowhere in these playoffs with that hitting line-up. Peavy didn't exactly step up either, although he will still win the Cy Young. His 2 biggest starts of the year, this one and the one on three days rest vs Arizona a few weeks back when he begged to take the ball, were his 2 worst outings.

Cool Re: Trevor Hoffman Biggest Blown Save

That's why the Save is the most overrated category now.

If Hoffman gets in the HOF over Goose Gossage, something is definitely wrong.

You know what? Sparky Lyle was a better closer than Trevor Hoffman. And he got HUGE saves, including a 7 inning one in the playoffs.
