| Trevor Hoffman honored, blows save Not exactly what you'd call a storybook day for Padres closer Trevor Hoffman. Before yesterday's game against the Dodgers, Hoffman was honored for being the all-time MLB career saves leader. Then he promptly went out and gave up four runs in the ninth inning to blow his second straight save opportunity, the first time he's done so in a decade. What's wrong with the San Diego closer?

| The Saves cateogry is the most overratedicategory of our time. 20 years ago, closers used to pitch more than one inning at a time. Sparky Lyle was as good as Hoffman. If he pitched today, he would also have a million saves. |
