Re: Phillip Rivers era begins

According to this story, yesterday was the first time Phillip Rivers had entered a full-squad practice as the starting quarterback of the San Diego Chargers. So in many ways, it marks the official start of the Rivers era, and so far so it, or so it seems. Rivers seems confident, and Tomlinson sounded like he has a lot of faith in the new QB, adding that he was looking forward to this season because "Everybody is saying, 'Can they win with a new quarterback? It's always a challenge for us athletes when people start talking about what we're going to do. It's a new challenge for us, and we look forward to proving people wrong."

I would have kept Brees...lets hope Rivers is not the second coming of Ryan Leaf down in San Diego...

I'm with you again Gotham. This team could have competed for a Super Bowl this year. Getting rid of Breeze was the bonehead move of the off season in my opinion.

Re: Phillip Rivers era begins

Well, that makes the trifecta, because I ALSO agree that they should've kept Brees. They were a playoff team with him, with Rivers they're .500 tops. Rivers may yet be a good QB but there's no reason why you just dump a Pro Bowl caliber quarterback like Brees to take a chance on a guy who has as much a shot to be the next Heath Shuler as he does the next Peyton Manning.

Wow, the big three in total agreement...mark it done...it's an offical bonehead move. Rivers has little chance in making it now...

Re: Phillip Rivers era begins

Uh-oh. Don't look now, but Rivers is playing pretty well. In fact, according to the author of this story, "Anyone who saw Saturday night's 15-for-21, 169-yard performance, which included a touchdown pass on the first drive, saw absolutely no regression in this offense. The team was fired up with Rivers at quarterback, and he looked the part of a five-year veteran... There will be no drop-off with this team this year. I'd expect Denver and San Diego to battle it out for AFC West supremacy this year. This is a playoff team, barring injury."

I know it's early, but has Phillip Rivers won anyone here over yet?

I can't say that I am. One pre-season game doesn't mean a whole lot and I am not impressed with Green Bay at all. No doubt the Chargers have alot of talent, but Marty will find a way to mees up 2 or 3 games this season, like last year when he dind't throw 1 pass to L.T. the first two games of the season...

The result? 2 losses....

The real bonehead move was to not address problems at the O-Line. Rivers will be fine. He's going to surprise people this year, even behind a subpar line. When the Chargers address the O-Line, then they will be SB contenders.

True, Marty is a good teacher, but not a great sideline coach. But with the talent he has this year, I predict 11-5 reg season record and win at least on post season game. The over/under right now in vegas for Charger wins is 9. I'm taking the over. They are a lock to win more than nine games.

While I'm making predictions, they will sweep KC and Oakland, and split with Denver.

I love the support for your team there Thumper...bu a lock to win more than 9 games?...I think that's a stretch...this team will go through its share of growing pains with Rivers at the helm. I think he will develop fine...but he is going to cost them a few wins along the way.

Rivers will be fine. He's the real deal. I was sceptical at first and really liked Drew Brees, but we aren't losing anything switching to Rivers. The O-Line will be our downfall. If Rivers looks bad, watch the protection he gets. Even so, yes the Chargers are a lock to win 10 games.

Like I said, highly optimistic...there are some guys in Vegas who will gladly take your money on that...Rivers is two years away from developing...The man has 30 career attempts in the regular season...While he won't be the second coming of Ryan Leaf, I don't think that makes his team a lock for 10 wins...

Re: Phillip Rivers era begins

seems to me this is another one of those cases of 'we cant sit the guy when he is making so much money'

i could be wrong in this case, but it seems to happen alot

no matter how well someone is doing, if another player at the same position is making more money they get more chances most of the time
