Key gains: S Marlon McCree (Panthers), CB Antonio Cromartie (Florida State), OT Marcus McNeill (Auburn), WR Rashaun Woods (49ers).
Key losses: QB Drew Brees (Saints), WR Reche Caldwell (Patriots), TE Justin Peelle (Dolphins).
Breakdown: After two years sitting behind Brees, 2004 first-round pick Philip Rivers takes over at quarterback. The defense got solid additions in McCree and Cromartie, who has the tools to be a star. McNeill has the talent to start immediately if he overcomes back problems. Chargers tried to trade productive ILB Donnie Edwards, but found no takers. Woods, a 2004 first-rounder, might help the receiving corps if he stays healthy. Questions: Will the gamble on Rivers pay off? No. 1 WR Keenan McCardell is 35 and Woods has missed 15 games in two years with injuries. How much will Cromartie help in his first year? Reigning defensive rookie of the year Shawne Merriman is a star, but the other starting linebackers are over 30. Coach Marty Schottenheimer needs a playoff berth to save his job.


Call me crazy, but if I need a playoff bid to save my job, I certainly would have kept the experienced Brees over Rivers.

Wasn't Marty's call, though. He wanted Brees, GM A.J. Smith wanted Rivers (and consequently doesn't really want Marty - word is Smith is setting up Schottenheimer to fail so he can bring his own guy in).
