Rivers is the least of the Chargers worries. He will play up to par with the performace Brees would have given us, and possibly more. Sure, he'll make some mistakes, but so does every QB including Brees.
Bigger worry for the Chargers has to be the O-Line. L Jordan is a turn style on pass blocking. Goff is terrible. Without a healthy Oben, the Chargers have serious problems on the O-Line. McNeil is a plus. He needs to power through his blocks, instead of just getting in the way of his defender, but he's already an upgrade to Jordan. McNeil's lack of power on his blocks is not good for his run blocking. I hate to say this, but at this stage L Jordan is a better run blocker. That combined with his NFL experience gets him the start LT job to start the season. McNeil will win the job about half way through the season if Oben doesn't return. Hardwick is a bcakup at center in my eyes. I know the Chargers are high on him and he added some bulk in the off season, but he has yet to prove that he can keep that weight on for a whole season. I like his mean streak though.
The O-line is a teams foundation. If it comes together and performs, we'll go far. There is more talent on this team at the skill postions than at any time I can remember. More talent here than the '94 super bowl team. Yes, our secondary is still suspect, but the o-line is our achilles heal.
I have been to every training camp session that was open to the public and closely watch both of our preseason games. Let me take your worries away about Rivers. He's the real deal. The O-line on the other hand NEEDS to be addressed.
