| Rumors Surface of Philip Rivers Torn ACL ![]() Details are sketchy, but a Boston TV and radio sportscaster has apparently reported that the knee injury suffered by San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is much more serious than he or the team has let on. Specifically, the report says that Rivers suffered a partially torn ACL, the three letters that no player ever wants to hear when doctors are examining his knee. The initial report is not online, but a few web sites, including Roto World and Pro Football Talk, have picked up on it. It is possible for a quarterback to at least try to play on a torn ACL -- Oregon's Dennis Dixon did it during the 2007 college football season, with ugly results -- but it sure wouldn't be easy. My belief is that the report is probably wrong, and Rivers' injury is to his MCL, not his ACL. The Chargers say Rivers will be a game-time decision, and that if he can't go, backup Billy Volek will start the AFC Championship at New England. | Re: Rumors Surface of Philip Rivers Torn ACL Roto World's usually reliable, which makes me think there may be validity to the report. If so, San Diego shouldn't even think about playing him. All they need to do is watch film of Dixon playing on his torn ACL. A healthy Volek gives them a much better chance to win.
