Re: Vegas mayor contacts Chargers about relocating

And so the rumors continue. There's L.A., Vegas, San Antonio... the only place that doesn't seem like a possible home for the Chargers next season is San Diego, although the city does seem to be investigating possible financing for a new stadium, if recent reports are to be believed.

We've discussed the possibilities and problems of a pro sporting franchise moving to Nevada several times before... but if you're an owner or a league commissioner, what does it take to convince you to let a team relocate to Las Vegas?

Re: Vegas mayor contacts Chargers about relocating

I think for any league to allow a team into Vegas the casinos would have to take that league off the books. Baseball probably wouldn't be that big of a hit for the casinos but taking pro football out of the sports books would a big chunk of revenue (both on the actual football betting and also the other money football bettors spend in the casino) the casinos would be losing out on.

I also think for a pro sports team to succeed in Vegas they would need a very strong local fan base but also be close enough to the strip where the tourists could easily attend the game. Since Vegas is full of transplanted people a local fan base would be tough to build since most people already have allegiances to teams from where they previously lived so the team would need to do an amazing job of marketing to current Vegas residents.

They would also need their share of tourists to go to the game to fill up the stands. I know that if Vegas had a team and the Seahawks were playing them I would be on a plane to Vegas in a heartbeat to see the game and I am sure that Vegas would be one of the most popular locations for opposing fans to attend an away game for their team. This along with the regular Vegas visitors would probably fill the stadium every week so attendance wouldn't be a problem.

Wow, I better stop before this gets too long. Bottom line: I think a pro football team could work in Vegas but it would be tough. If I had to pick one of the 3 major sports to succeed in Vegas I would go with the NBA.

Cool Re: Vegas Mayor: Chargers Relocating

The NFL and NBA will never have a team in Vegas. Baseball maybe, but no way David Stern or whomever the NFL commissioner becomes will open up that can of worms.

Re: Vegas Mayor: Chargers Relocating

I presumed The NFL and MLB would never have Vegas franchises. Mainly becuase both are entirely too conservative to have a team in Sin City.
The NBA is having there 2007 all-star game in Vegas, it seems like that is a stepping stone to eventually having a Vegas home team.

If the Chargers relocate, their song will sound funny. Las Vegas Super Chargers.
