Rookie LB Faces Assault Charges

San Diego Chargers rookie linebacker Anthony Waters faces misdemeanor assault and battery charges after an incident this week in which the former Clemson star is alleged to have beaten a man on the head and body.
A third-round draft choice, Waters appeared before an Horry County (S.C.) magistrate on Friday, where he was charged and released on $1,000 bond. A representative for the Horry County police said Saturday that a trial date has not been set.
According to an arrest warrant and an incident report, the windshield of Waters' car was smashed on Tuesday when Colby Sarvis allegedly threw a rock at the vehicle. Waters pulled to the side of the road, a confrontation ensued, and Waters and a friend, Brian Rogers, are alleged to have beaten Sarvis.
Waters, 22, and Rogers are charged with simple assault and battery. Sarvis was charged with malicious damage to personal property.
Despite missing all but one game of the 2006 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee, Waters, a three-year starter at middle linebacker for Clemson, was the 96th prospect chosen overall in this year's draft. At 6-feet-2 ½ and 245 pounds, and noted for his run-stopping skills, Waters is seen as a very good fit for an inside linebacker spot in the Chargers' 3-4 defensive alignment.
In 36 career appearances, including 23 starts, Waters registered 217 tackles, 22 ½ tackles for losses, 3 ½ sacks, eight passes defensed and one forced fumble. In 2004, he was suspended for one game for his role in an on-field brawl against Temple.
Waters injured his knee early in the 2006 season opener against Florida Atlantic, missed the balance of the season, and then spent much of the early portion of this year rehabilitating and readying himself for the draft. He has yet to sign his rookie contract with the Chargers.
