Re: Chargers to Leave San Diego?

Wow, I wonder what the odds of them actually leaving the San Diego area are? Maybe we've found the team the NFL will wind up transplanting to Los Angeles? Heck, the league could even offer to pick up the tab for what the team owes on Qualcomm, if they're serious about football in L.A.

Thumbs up Re: Chargers to Leave San Diego?

Now, this makes sense. Moving a marginally economically successful franchise from a small market to one of the largest -- never mind the single largest fully explotiable american football market in the world -- makes sense. As does the suggestion that the NFL pay for Qualcomm.

Lefty for NFL Commissioner!

Cheers!

LA is the original home of the Chargers. They are the only NFL team that began in LA. Many LA fans have already turned to the Chargers for their NFL fix. I lived in Anaheim when the Rams left, and went to a Broncos game in San Diego the first year. As a former Rams season ticket holder, I have always felt abandoned by the Rams and NFL in general. Contrary to what many people believe, if there is a stadium in a nice part of town(LA Coliseum is in south central LA) an NFL team will do very well in the LA area. It would also help if the stadium is easily accessible from a freeway.

Re: Chargers to Leave San Diego?

So would you rather see the Chargers return to L.A. or would you rather have an expansion team, desertrat?

Re: Chargers to Leave San Diego?

I could see the Chargers moving to LA. The diehard Chargers fans could still make the short trip up to LA (assuming the new stadium is built somewhere with easy access for people coming from SD) and it would also draw more fans from the LA area. This seems much more viable than an expansion team. It would suck for SD to lose a team but it would still be easy for the fans to follow their team as opposed to a team like Jacksonville or Minnesota moving all the way across the country.

Now, now Lefty, are you sure you do not want to move to them to say...San Antonio?...

Cool Re: Chargers to Leave San Diego?

When you think about it, it's sort of nuts that there is NO NFL team in LA.

Re: San Diego mayor addresses Chargers stadium, relocation

This is what struck me most about the article mentioned above:

Quote:
It is expected that groups from cities such as Los Angeles, Anaheim and San Antonio will show interest in the Chargers in 2007 when the lease allows such negotiations. The team can relocate as soon as 2008 under the terms of the current contract and would have to pay off about $60 million in the city's stadium debt should it leave.

...

The Los Angeles Daily News reported Friday that the National Football League eventually wants two teams in the Los Angeles area.
Obviously, L.A.'s the top candidate. But Anaheim and San Antonio as well? That's a bit of a shock, especially considering San Antonio's also trying to woo baseball's Florida Marlins to the city.

Re: Chargers to Leave San Diego?

No team in LA? You want to know crazy? How about no major-league level franchise in Las Vega$, the single fastest growing city in America with tons more money and better weather than the latest darling of expansion, Charlotte.

On one hand, the common wisdom is that LA may be the single largest market for football in the world, considering that New York has two teams, really. On the other hand is the argument that LA blew it twice; in 1979, they had the NFC champion and in '83 they had the Lombardi Trophy. Hell, the city lost the Angels' team name in 1965. It's just not a sports-loving city, it seems...

Cheers.

Re: Chargers to Leave San Diego?

With San Diego filing bankruptcy not too long ago there might not be any funding or support for a new stadium. With a new stadium, the Chargers will stay in San Diego is my bet.

Re: Chargers to Leave San Diego?

We don't need any more teams. We have enough. I could care less what market they are in as long as ladanian keeps blowing it up.
