Contra Costa Times, CA - Feb 14, 2007
Norv Turner, the 49ers offensive coordinator, and Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan interviewed for the vacant San Diego Chargers coaching job Thursday.
Twice fired as an NFL head coach, Turner was San Diego's offensive coordinator in 2001. After Mike Riley was fired as coach, Turner interviewed for the job that went to Marty Schottenheimer.
"For me to want to be a head coach, it needed to be a real unique situation, and to me this is a unique situation in terms of I've coached here, I know a lot of the people involved and for me, it's an outstanding football team," said Turner, who was 58-82-1 in head coaching stints with Washington and the Raiders. "I've been in a couple of situations that were not maybe ideal in terms of the way I perceived them."
Turner recently interviewed for Dallas' head coaching job that went to Wade Phillips, who was San Diego's defensive coordinator.
The Chargers were 35-13 the last three seasons, winning two AFC West titles.
"Obviously it's been a very well-coached team, but there are a lot of players on this football team that will be a lot better players two and three years from now than they are right now," Turner said.
