Chargers Fire Marty Schottenheimer

In a surprising move, the Chargers have fired their head coach, Marty Schottenheimer.

Statement from Owner Dean Spanos. According to him, Marty staying was based only on whether the other coaches remained on the staff, which they did not.

Wow, talk about a turn around. After all the moves have been made, the Chargers are now without a coach. Who will they turn to?

Agreed completely. They're nuts not only for firing Marty, but also for doing it this close to the draft, for cryin' out loud? They've got to have their eye on someone, maybe Norv Turner or Ron Rivera, or else this move would've never happened. And even so, it still shouldn't have happened. Spanos is an idiot.

Re: Chargers Fire Marty Schottenheimer

The blunder is on general manager A.J. Smith here. It was obvious that he did not love Schottenheimer, so why make the move so late when the coaching market is already depleted? He held Schottenheimer to the unrealistic expectation that both coordinators would be retained, which we knew wouldn't happen.

My first interview would be Mike Singletary.

What a stupid move. I'm going to laugh if the Chargers don't make the playoffs next year. We will all look back and say "well, they shouldn't have fired Marty Schottenheimer." Yea, he has had bad runs in the playoffs, but this Chargers team is very talented, and they could have led Schottenheimer to a Superbowl ring next year, or to the Superbowl atleast. Bad move on their part.

That won't happen. Schottenheimer and Cowher are good friends. Maybe they will make a play for Art Shell.

Re: Chargers Fire Marty Schottenheimer

My guess is that they will try to get Ron Rivera. Didn't SF get Norv Turner to stay?

San Diego Chargers Coach Fired

Marty Schottenheimer didn’t get along with GM A.J Smith and paid the price Monday. With one year and $3 million left on his contract with the San Diego Chargers, coach Schottenheimer was let go.

Okay, so how does a coach, who successfully leads his team (a roster that includes league MVP LaDainian Tomlinson) to an NFL best 14-2 season, suddenly lose his job? Simple. He loses two coordinators (they both took jobs NFL head coaches) and two assistants (who became coordinators) and screws up in the eyes of the general manager.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Chargers president Dean Spanos cited a "dysfunctional situation" between coach Marty Schottenheimer and general manager A.J. Smith as the main cause for the sudden firing of Schottenheimer.

Rivera, or possibly Singletary or Dennis Green. Can't really think of too many other candidates out there at the moment.

Yeah, OK, maybe. With the problems down at USC, he could be looking to jump ship. I'm also hearing Parcells as a possibility.

Re: Chargers Fire Marty Schottenheimer

This team has lost its offensive coordinator [Cam Cameron], defensive coordinator [Wade Phillips], linebackers coach [Greg Manusky], tight ends coach [Rob Chudzinski], assistant strength and conditioning coach [Matt Schiotz].

The bottom had already fell out,Marty just happen to be the last one to fall out,Marty and A.J Smith had a rocky buisness relationship to begin with, the timing of the firing is what i disagree with the most.

The Chargers are probably going to look to hire a coach who will be able to co-exist with A.J. Smith...perhap's Denny Green?,Ted cottrell ?, Turner ? Rivera ? Singletary? or hire a coach for a year and pursue Cowher next year.

kenman923 I don't see Art being given a gig coaching at the NFL level ever again....

The only fans that "Marty Chokenheimer" had fooled into thinking he was a good coach was none chief fans .
"The Chokenheimer" has caused the Chiefs to lose so many costley games because of his stuberness and conserverness it was bound to catch up with him .
The best thing that ever happin to the "Big Choke" is his being friends with "Carl (The Hustleler) Peterson" and being part of one of the biggest Scam in kansas City's history.
If you would please do one thing and that is look closely to a chargers game and you will see that "Chokenheimer" was a none factor on either side of the ball.
Thanks to That 'hustlen Peterson' he would have never made It after 'Cleveland"; Washington exsposed him first now the Chargers way To go fellas No more free ride' "Marty Chokenheimer".

Cool Re: Chargers Fire Marty Schottenheimer

The whole thing is unreal. AJ Smith and Schottenhimer haven't gotten along since he's been here. What, it suddenly got worse, between now and a month ago?

Personally, I thought it was the right move. Marty as a coach is like A-Rod is as a baseball player. Good in the regular season but clueless in the big game.

Pete Caroll? He was awful in the pros.

Norv Turner. I'd rather have Marty or anybody else at all for that matter.

Parcells? No way. He would come across as the biggest hypocrite and phony.

I have one: Brian Schottenheimer of the Jets
