Will Chargers Fire Marty Schottenheimer?

I think so. The GM has wanted to get rid of him for years, now is his chance. I expect Wade Phillips to replace him in San Diego.

Anyone disagree?

Re: Will Chargers Fire Marty Schottenheimer?

I agree with you. I think by the end of this week, Marty will no longer be the coach of the San Diego Chargers. I think they should the head coaching job, though, to Cam Cameron. Wade Phillips is a good coordinator but only a mediocre head coach. If you want to bring in a retread, why not someone like Norv Turner, Jim Fassel, or Steve Mariucci. Personally, I think Mooch would be great for the Chargers.

I agree. I think we've seen the last of Marty Ball with the Chargers. I like the idea of Cam Cameron or even Jim Mora Jr. replacing him. But I'm just not a Wade Phillips nor a Mariucci believer. I know he's gonna take a year off but how good could they be with Bill Cowher?? WOW!!! But that ain't gonna happen. Also don't be surprised if they give an interview to Mike Martz.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Jim Mora, Jr. I think he may be a defensive coordinator somewhere before becoming a head coach. Mike Martz would be a great choice.

Re: Will Chargers Fire Marty Schottenheimer?

Personally I feel they should keep Marty. I mean his team was making dumb mistake after dumb mistake on sunday so it's not his fault they lost. The time out on the fumble recover from the INT was dumb but he led the Chargers to a 14-2 season and did wonderful with Philip Rivers.

I agree. If his DB doesn't get stripped by Troy Brown; if his idiot defensive player doesn't headbutt the Patriots tight end; if the guy upstairs doesn't tell him to throw the flag and waste a timeout; if Nate Kaeding has a little more distance and accuracy; if any one of those things happen, the Chargers go to the AFC Championship. Exactly which of those are Marty's fault?

Re: Will Chargers Fire Marty Schottenheimer?

Schottenheimer hasn't won a playoff game in what? Over a decade long?

That's got to speak for something.

Yes that's true but I mean if theyre just gonna give Wade Phillips the job then don't bother cuz that's no upgrade. Besides, Tony Dungy is another coach who's teams seem to falter in the playoffs and if he was fired he'd be out of work less than a day before he's a head coach. Same with Marty I think. His son will certainly be a head coach within the next 3 years. I'm sorry I know Marty is the head coach of the Chargers but I saw the Chargers well prepared against a dynasty sunday and the players being a young team make boneheaded mistakes to hand the game to the Patriots. I feel Marty did his job sunday well. All the critcism that he's too conservative come playoff time didn't happen against the Pats.

Cool Re: Will Chargers Fire Marty Schottenheimer?

They should get rid of him. The guy is just bad karma. In a big game, he doesn't know what the hell he's doing.

And Cam Cameron? What was he thinking only givng the ball to Tomlinson 9 times in the 2nd half?

They have the talent to win the whole thing next year. Who would be the best candidate to lead them there?

Jim Mora? Don't make me laugh. Cameron? I lost a ton of respect for him in the 2nd half of that game.

What about bring Jimmy Johnson out of retirement? If he were coaching, Tomlinson would have got the ball a ton more, and they would have won the game.

But LT has given him a vote of confidence for whatever it's worth. By Bernie Wilson on Bolt Talk

Marty Schottenheimer got a vote of confidence Monday from LaDainian Tomlinson. Unfortunately for Schottenheimer, the league MVP isn’t going to be deciding whether he remains as coach of the San Diego Chargers

I think you'd have to hold his family hostage to Jimmy Johnson to coach again! JJ just doesn't want to do it and not like the Tuna who retires then coaches the next year...JJ I think loves being a slacker!

Shottenheimer is staying. Spanos and Smith are out of their minds.

Exclamation Re: Will Chargers Fire Marty Schottenheimer?

He's a good coach besides who would replace him, Jim Mora? C'mon if Marty ever gets a superbowl he is a guaranteed Hall of Famer, it is not his fault that the players make stupoid mistakes, what needs to be addressed is the players off field bonehead actions being carried on to the field of play, they are turning into the So Cal Bengals....

Schottenheimer returning to coach San Diego
The Courier News, IL - Jan 18, 2007

SAN DIEGO -- Marty Schottenheimer might be down to one last chance to get the San Diego Chargers to the Super Bowl.

Three days after the talented Chargers melted down in a stunning 24-21 playoff loss to New England, team president Dean Spanos decided Wednesday that bringing Schottenheimer back for the final year of his contract gives San Diego its best chance to win.

Schottenheimer, though, declined the team's offer of a one-year extension for 2008 worth $4.5 million, with a $1 million buyout.

Re: Schottenheimer returning to coach San Diego

I wonder why he declined the extension offer?

Could he be considering retirement, or thinking about cashing in elsewhere with a big payday in 2008?
