Chargers to let Brees walk?

San Diego hasn't been able to sign Drew Brees, though the two side have talked about a multiyear deal. They seem unwilling to use the franchise or transition tags on him, and the deadline is just two days away. But GM A.J. Smith has told reporters that he would feel comfortable with Philip Rivers at QB to open the season.

Are they seriously thinking about just letting Brees walk?

I can't believe they'd let Brees walk without ever having seen what Rivers can do. I mean, how much has he shown them from the bench these last couple of seasons?

This could really come back to haunt SD.

Cool Brees

A.J Smith is just saying that for leverage purposes. Brees is sitting pretty and he knows it.

The Chargers would have to have rocks in their head if they let Brees walk. With Brees, they can actually compete for a Super Bowl. With Rivers, even if he's good, the odds of getting to a Super Bowl this year with a rookie QB are slim, and who knows if he'll even be good.

The only reason the Chargers didn't make the playoffs last year was that they had the most brutal schedule in the league.

I'd be shocked if they didn't cut a deal but what do I know?

What about the Brees injury? You cannot dismiss that. It was his throwing arm that got hurt.

Definitely worth mentioning. Many people think that if Brees had ended the season healthy, they'd be looking to trade Rivers instead...

Still, it's pretty risky. I just haven't seen enough of Rivers to be convinced he'll be as good, soon, as Brees was last year.
