| Kings looking at bigs in the draft Sports - Marty Mac's World: Kings first pick far from clear-cut - sacbee.com Quote:
Thursday's NBA draft is the crapshoot of the week.
If it is true the Chicago Bulls have not decided to use the No. 1 choice on Memphis' Derrick Rose or Kansas State's Michael Beasley – and that's up for debate – then with the 12th pick the Kings certainly have more questions than answers.
Once again, Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie is trying to pull a rabbit out of his hat. The Kings should be trying to find a power interior player or a point guard capable of defending.
The latter might be more difficult to find because there are more big men in this draft than prime-time point guards.
Of course, the big men who could be available – Stanford's Robin and/or Brook Lopez, Ohio State's Kosta Koufos, Kansas' Darrell Arthur, Georgetown's Roy Hibbert, Rider's Jason Thompson and France's Alexis Ajinca – generally are considered to be projects. Hibbert is highly skilled and reputed to be a hard worker, characteristics we know Petrie likes.
However, Hibbert is not a big banger or rebounder, so his selection might not solve the problem.
Koufos is 7 feet, 265 pounds, and was a talented freshman with big-time upside. He's also skilled and 19 years old and appears to have a bit of a mean streak. On the court, that is a good thing.
As for the point guard slot, there is Rose and then the rest of them. Kansas' Mario Chalmers certainly held his own against Rose in the NCAA championship game. He's only listed at 6-1, but he's tough and could be worthy of a look if still around when the Kings have successive picks at Nos. 42 and 43. The same goes for Mike Taylor, who played well last year in the NBA Development League.
