Can Bull Riding Make It In New York City?

The Professional Bull Riding tour is much more popular than the American media make it seem. I once talked to a Versus executive who told me that the network considers PBR a more valuable property than the NHL. But it's mostly a southern, western and rural sport. Can PBR make it in America's biggest city? They're giving it a shot:

YouTube - PBR Invades New York!

I could see PBR becoming a hot ticket at Madison Square Garden some day. And if PBR makes it in New York, the mainstream media won't ignore it anymore.

Wow, the NHL has fallen pretty low.

The PBR already went to NYC last year, and it was absolutely huge. It's growing so much, and for good reason - it's a great sport.

Nothing against the sport, but it will need to be overhauled. It is exciting to watch, but I don't think any sport that relies on judging will ever make it to the big time. There could be too much debate on the judging decision. There needs to be set rules for what a good ride is. I don't watch all the time, so I may not know what I am talking about, but that is one of the reasons I don't watch all the time.

The judging does have rules. There are certain things they look for in both the rider and bull. I think the way they judge is fine, especially since there are 4 judges. But that's just my opinion. Anyway, they've been doing it this way for... this will be the 14th year - and it's grown immensely. Maybe they will come up with a new way to score eventually that doesn't rely on a person's opinion as much, but for now, it seems to work fine.

They are even judged on how well the bull performs? I didn't know that. What if a rider happens to get a lazy bull? That is another reason the scoring is not very fair. How about just scoring for the length of the ride and whether they use one hand or two.

If a rider gets a bull that doesn't perform well and they have a score under about 80, a rider will usually be offered another bull, and it is their choice whether or not to take the re-ride. Of course, there are some bulls that are harder than others, and it's just luck of the draw. I think that's one of the things that's so awesome about it - in order to be successful, a rider needs to be able to ride every type of bull.

Adriano is awesome. He was hinting last night that maybe this will be his last season. Anyway, he did awesome this weekend. Nice ride on Buckwheat.
My personal favorite is Brian Canter (that's where my username comes from). I was so glad to see him do so well this weekend - he had a rough season last year. Can't wait for next weekend in NYC!!

Re: Can Bull Riding Make It In New York City?

Last week's event in New York City was one of the best I've seen. The new bull draft was awesome, and it really added to the event. The crowds in New York City were great as well. It's always good to know bull riding, the PBR in general, is growing so rapidly. I'm looking forward to this week's event in Worcester as well.

I've posted some key first-round match-ups for Worcester at my blog.

OMG I can't wait for Sunday!!! We've been going to the Sunday part of the Worcester Classic for 6 years now, and it's so much fun. I've been getting so excited.
