He's lucky the car he crashed into wasn't a bigger car or a big rig. There's no telling how serious his injuries would've been had he bounced off of a 18-wheeler.

Re: Big Ben Crashes Motorcycle

I have two points to express about this subject matter:

a)First of all, why did the Steelers agree to a contract with a player who can risk a potential injury off the field? Weren't they aware of his dangerous habits before they handed him the contract? Hopefully, Roethlisberger will be ready for the next season, and won't look too bad. I hope this doesn't destroy the personality of Roethlisberger.

b)If Roethlisberger went flying into an 18-wheeler, it is likely that he would fly underneath. Let's just put it that he would look like the witch in the Wizard of the Oz who's feet are sticking out from underneath the house. In other words, he would have been flattened like a strawberry pancake at IHOP.

Re: Big Ben Crashes Motorcycle

Now, they say he only had a learner's permit and it expired in March Can't wait to see if and what his charges will be. Should the "poor little old lady" have to take all the fault or is he just as, if not more, guilty?

Re: Big Ben Crashes Motorcycle

Pa law says that if you only have a learner's permit, you must wear a helmet.

State trooper said section 2535 of motorcycle laws are as follows:
Pa law states you must wear a helmet unless you "fall" under the exemptions:
Exemptions:
21 or older on 3 wheeler with enclosed cab, and licensed for 2 years
21 or older and have taken an approved motorcycle safety class
Passengers -
under 21 must wear helmet
over 21 only if driver "falls" under the exemptions, if driver isn't exempted, neither is the passenger

The Steelers definitely knew about it. ESPN did a whole story last year about the fact that Rothlisberger rode a motorcycle without a helmet. It's still amazing to me that he's not dead. Sometimes it's just a matter of a fraction of an inch in how you fall. When Christopher Reeve flew off his horse, if he would have fallen an inch a different way, he would have been dead, an inch the other way, he would have been okay but he fell how he fell....(This was according to Reeve in one of his 2 books that I read).

Pure and simple. Laws were made to be broken and when you are the quarterback for the SuperBowl winning team ... you can do whatever you want .. until you get caught or in this case .... HURT. I'll bet there will be more resrtictions next time around. Then again flying in an airplane can be dangerous. People drown in bathtubs. What are you gonna do.

Re: Big Ben Crashes Motorcycle

I'm not here to debate helmet laws, just to add my two cents. I had a cousin who back in 1972, just home from Vietnam, took his motorcycle down the road for a "little spin" and never came back. He was found less than a mile from his home, having crashed into a stone wall. It was the most devestating thing that my family ever endured.
I recently started working with brain-injured individuals as a companion, and in just a few months I cannot even begin to tell you the effect that a brain injury has on the family, never mind the individual. It is like setting up an elaborate scheme of dominos, only to have one fall and wreck everything, without the ability to start over. It is the equivalent of writing on a blackboard for years, then having it all erased forever. The family suffers so much.
It is not just the individual, not wanting to wear a helmet, who is saying, "It's my life and I can do as I please". There is so much more to consider. Also, if Ben hit his head like they are saying, a brain injury sometimes takes years to show up! A violent collision such as head against windshield causes one's brain to collide with the inside of your skull, something that very often does not manifest itself for quite a while as a problem.

Yes, people can drown in bathtubs, but your odds of injury or death can be greatly reduced by not taking a plugged in toaster with you. In the same way, Ben clearly should've been wearing a helmet. It's just one of those common sense things, but common sense and pro athletes don't always go hand-in-hand.

No argument. It's that "It won't happen to me" attitude, but it generally does happen and when it does it is never pretty. Years ago I remember a high school class mate took out several guard rails (wooden) and the only reason he is alive today is because he wore the optional helmet. His parents were pretty happy with that choice.

Cool Re: Big Ben Crashes Motorcycle

Roethlisberger said he was very close to dying.

"They told me that I was literally seconds, maybe a minute away from dying because I slit a vein or artery in my mouth or my throat and it was draining blood right into my stomach and luckily the paramedic noticed it and stopped it or else I would have had too much blood in my stomach,"

Re: Big Ben Crashes Motorcycle

Wow, hadn't heard that. He's one very fortunate individual, no doubt about it, and I sure hope he never gets it in his head to try anything that stupid again. You know what's odd is I've never paid attention before, but there are more bikers who don't wear helmet than bikers who do, even now, in the Pittsburgh area, after what happened to Ben. Did they learn NOTHING?
