Rooney's Legacy gets Black Eye

Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney is generally considered a class act. He was behind the Rooney Rule, which said teams had to interview minority candidates when looking to fill head coaching vacancies.
James Harrison and Cedric Wilson were each accused of domestic violence against their significant others. Wilson was cut, Harrison was not. You could say that since Harrison is probably the best defensive player on the team, and Wilson a mere role player that Wilson was cut to make an example.
But that wasnt it. Rooney drew a distinction between the two cases because he says that Harrison was trying to do right(he and his girlfriend had disagreement about the baptism of their son. He wanted to and she didnt)
But you cant distinguish between domestic violence. Once Harrison hit his girlfriend it didnt make any difference what he initially wanted.
It is surprising that Rooney doesnt see this and it leaves a black eye on his legacy.

Lion in Oil: Dan Rooney's Legacy Gets A Black Eye

Some of you in another thread thought that it wasnt because Harrison was the better player that he didnt get cut. You thought the circumstances made it alright.
Do you still??

Re: Rooney's Legacy gets Black Eye

Because Harrison wasn't a repeat offender, and had not been previously warned about his conduct as Wilson had been, I believe the punishments were fair. But since that's not the official reason being given by the Steelers and Rooney, I am left to wonder somewhat...

I think whatever policy the Steelers have in place is up to them...if they give a warning...that's up to them...if they don't that's okay too...I don't see how Rooney gets a black eye in this...Jason Kidd and Warren Moon both had incidents in their careers...and they did not lose a job...so its not like its a new thing.

Goth, you're not getting it. It had nothing to do with warning or first or second incident. The only reason Rooney gave is because Harrison was trying to get his son baptized and therefore it made it all right to pop his girlfriend. It had nothing to do with their policy according to him. Had he said that, this thread wouldnt be here.

Huh?...naw...Rooney is not that stupid...you can't say that there is a valid reason for hitting a girl...there is never a vaild reason...I mean, unless she is charging you with a knife and wanting to hack you to pieces...then...okay...sure...but not normally.

But he was and he did. And I have read this in more than one place.
"I know many are asking the question of [why] we released Wilson and Harrison we kept,'' he said. "The circumstances -- I know of the incidents, they are completely different. In fact, when I say we don't condone these things, we don't, but we do have to look at the circumstances that are involved with other players and things like that, so they're not all the same."
"What Jimmy Harrison was doing and how the incident occurred, what he was trying to do was really well worth it," he said of Mr. Harrison's initial intent with his son. "He was doing something that was good, wanted to take his son to get baptized where he lived and things like that. She said she didn't want to do it."

I kind of figured. When I heard the explanation originally, it made sense to me. But this? This doesn't jive.
