| Steelers Sign Simmons John Clayton of ESPN reports that the Steelers have signed guard Kendall Simmons to a four-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through 2011.
Per Clayton, the deal gives Simmons a little less than $24 million in new money with $7.85 million in guarantees. From the Steelers' perspective, this seems like a good deal: they have the 28-year-old Simmons under contract for the next five years, and he'll cost them less than $5 million a year. This at a time when a few mediocre guards have received seven-year, $49 million deals.
Clayton reports that although the Steelers expect guard Alan Faneca to leave at the end of the season, they like the way their line looks going forward with Simmons, center Sean Mahan and right tackle Willie Colon all part of the team's long-term plans. Chris Kemoeatu is expected to become a starting guard alongside Simmons when Faneca leaves. ProFootballTalk.com -- The Best Pro Football Scoop on the Internet |
