Guard Alan Faneca will report on time to training camp, but he indicated it will be the start of his last season in a Steelers uniform. "I'll be there," Faneca told the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. "I don't think I'll have bells on, but I'll be there. I'm going to go about my business and play football. It's about playing with the guys next to you and playing for a job as well. It's a true sense of playing for a job, it just happens to be somewhere else the following year."
The six-time Pro Bowler skipped most of the team's offseason workouts because the Steelers' lone offer to extend his contract, which expires following the 2007 season, was in his mind insulting—not even paying him what the top 10 guards in the league currently make. This may not seem to hold much fantasy significance on the surface, but seeing as Faneca is essentially the
LaDainian Tomlinson of guards it could have serious long-term ramifications for the keeper values of
Willie Parker and
Ben Roethlisberger.
