Steelers Cut Tommy Maddox, Willie Williams

No surprises here. Former starting QB Tommy Maddox and CB Willie Williams have been released by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Everybody and their mother saw this coming. Maddox would've counted $1.7 mill against the cap and Williams was set to make around $1.2 mill for warming the bench. Think there'll be any more cuts? I hear Jeff Hartings if the CBA deal doesn't get done, but I hope that's not the case.

Well there goes the franchise!...I heard from an unreliable second rate source that Big Ben was jealous of Tommy...he demanded the cut...and I am quoting my source on this, Big Ben said "Either he goes or I go!"...and by golly the Big guy got his way. Tommy, tommy, tommy...we hardly knew you!..

I read it...Maddox what a class act...all he wants is for a chance to compete...and really, is he that much worse than Charlie Batch?...I ask you?

Aaaah Lefty...you in on this Steeler conspiracy...next thing you are going to tell me is that Tommy should have stayed in school...that Dan Reeves shouldn't have drafted him...the man is better than Batch...mark my words...when the Arena league picks him up...you watch...45 TD's next year...45!...

Isn't 45 TDs low for an Arena League team? I mean, don't they score that in a game? Anyway, it really doesn't matter if Mad Maddox was better than Batch or not - there's no way he's worth $1.7 mill against the cap.

Anyone ask him to re-structure the deal?

Re: Steelers Cut Tommy Maddox, Willie Williams

This has been one of my favorite arguments since the beginning of last year. And truthfully I do not know which one is better. I know Big Ben is the guy, but would the Steelers every consider trying to get a good quality back up. Maybe draft a guy in the late rounds this year?

Re: Steelers Cut Tommy Maddox, Willie Williams

Somebody help me out here... they sent a guy over to NFL Europe to develop this season. I think it might have been former Pitt QB Ron Rutherford, but I can't remember for sure. If so, he might be the guy they're hoping will develop into the new No. 3.

Re: Steelers Cut Tommy Maddox, Willie Williams

Lefty,

You are absolutely right. His name is Rod Rutherford, and I remember seeing his name here and their. But I wonder if he is really what they are looking for. I would love to see them pick up a solid #2, but I guess they are depending on Batch. For some reason I just don't feel like Batch is the guy, but he did an okay job last season in limited time. He also started for Detroit a couple of seasons so he does have experience.

If its Ruthford I am aboard the bash tommy bandwagon...cause I am holding his rookie Autograph card...selfish I know...but hey good as reason as any for throwing Tommy under the bus...

Re: Steelers Cut Tommy Maddox, Willie Williams

Tommy Maddux will likely end up backing up Carson Palmer in Cinncinati this season. Yeah!! Should be one of the great free agent signings of all time, now if we could just get Dick Lebeau back... hmmm....
Any way, in other news, the league is putting a chill on the Bengals vs. Steelers opening up the NFL season on that Thursday night. Appears that Carson Palmer likely will not be able to play. But wait, wouldnt it be just as exciting to see Tommy Maddux running around like a chicken with his head cut off. Sure seemed to make great television when it was Johnny Kitna doing it.
Death to all back up quarter backs, who needs em'. New rule, your starter goes down, then game over.

Oh yeah, why is it that under the heading AFC North, the Steelers are the only team that has a post? Seems a little bizare.

Yes Lefty,

Rod Rutherford from Pitt. He is a raw talent. He played in a pro style offense at Pitt. He may get a shot this year.

Re: Steelers Cut Tommy Maddox, Willie Williams

I do not think that Rutherford is the answer. But for a third string quarterback he will be adequate I suppose. I would still like to see the Steelers pick up a young guy with a good arm. Maybe that guy is Rutherford, I am probably just jumping the gun!
