Bucs to honor Bonds

The Pirates and the San Francisco Giants will play a doubleheader on Monday, and in between games, the Bucs are going to honor new home run king Barry Bonds with a video tribute. Bonds won two MVP awards while playing in Pittsburgh, and hit 176 of his home runs in the Steel City. Regardless of what you think of Bonds, I think this is a classy move by the Pirates organization. What do you think?

Cool Re: Bucs to honor Bonds

Nothing against the Pirates, but I think this whole thing is a joke.

IT'S OK. Really, it is. If you find it repulsive or even discomforting that Barry Bonds has broken the most celebrated record in American sports, it's OK. It doesn't mean you're a bad person, or that you don't get it, or that you're crazy.

And Tuesday, right after Bonds passed Henry Aaron, the rationalizations were served deluxe - baloney hero with everything on it. Bonds, for better or worse, had become a victim of our inflexibility, our inability to look at a glass of dirty water and see that it's half full instead of half empty.....

Stop living the 70's...come back to us, here in the era of shorten fields, expansion pitching and steroids...Bonds if measured jsut aganist his peers, Sosa, Big Mac, Canseco etc is still a cut above...let them honor the man.

Maybe retire his number in the process.

Re: Bucs to honor Bonds

Any way you slice it, Bonds did a lot of great things as a Pirate. The team's doing right by paying tribute to him.

I am suprise that his homerun totals there were so low..has it been that long since he played there?...really thought he had 250 or so for the Bucs

He only averaged 24-25 per season with the Bucs, though he did have a couple 30-30 seasons there. Didn't get to be a true power hitter till he left Pittsburgh.

I think reality means a little adjustment to what is...Bonds is reflective of MLB and sports in general for this day and age...might as well shut down the major leagues...

No reason to shut the major leagues, because now everyone is on the same playing field. But when it comes to hallowed records, that's where I think it's a total sham.

But there is no remedy...and can you say that perhaps a guy like Home Run Baker might have hit 500 homers in if he did not play in a dead ball era with giant ball parks and train travel and less teams playing...where pitchers threw inside without the bench clearing all the time?

It is what it is...every era produces something new...it's a different game...hitters swing for the fences and strikeout in bunches...doubt we will see another .400 hitter...or heck a pitcher with 400 or 500 wins...

Things change...in that context, Bonds record is as good as anyones...

I like what Sparky Anderson had to say about this. Don't remember the exact quote, but it was along the lines of - if you say he's a cheater, prove it.

The book Game of Shadows, his lover's testimony and his appearance are enough proof for me. I don't know what everybody else wants, film of him shooting up?

Testing positive for steroids? Or is that asking too much? Seems to me everything else is hearsay and circumstanial evidence.
