| Re: Pirates @ Cardinals July 31st-August 2nd July 31st Preview: Adam Wainwright RHP (9-8, 4.45)@ Paul Maholm LHP (7-12, 4.57)Scouting Report: Cardinals: After starting July with a brilliant three-game stretch, Wainwright was slowed down a bit his last time out when he gave up six runs in five innings against the Cubs. Despite the rocky start, Wainwright has been the Cards' most reliable starter since the middle of June. Before the season, there was obvious concern that Wainwright would wear down a bit and struggle in the second half of the season, an understandable side effect of the transition from reliever to starter. He said his arm feels fine and there have been no signs of him wearing down physically. Wainwright is 1-1 against the Pirates this season. Pirates: Maholm was the beneficiary of some rare Pittsburgh offense in the Pirates' win vs. the Mets, though his quality start -- six innings and three runs -- certainly helped his cause. The victory marked the first time that Maholm had won back-to-back decisions this year, and just the second time that the Pirates had won since the All-Star break. Maholm hasn't seen the Cardinals since April, when he allowed two runs over five innings in a no-decision. link

| Re: Pirates @ Cardinals July 31st-August 2nd July 31st review: ![]() The Pirates had no problem getting on base on Tuesday night, banging out 12 hits to go with two walks. But scoring was another issue, as Bucs hitters left a combined 21 runners on base. Xavier Nady went 2-for-2 but left in the fourth inning with a strained left hamstring. link |

| Re: Pirates @ Cardinals July 31st-August 2nd August 1st Preview: Weather: 86 F Wind from NNE 2 MPH 0% chance of rain link Probable Pitchers: Tony Armas RHP (0-3, 6.93) vs. Braden Looper RHP (8-8, 4.85)Scouting Report: Cardinals: Looper was back to being good his last time out, pitching seven innings and giving up just one run to beat the Cubs. His stuff was good and his command was excellent. It's never been a question of whether or not Looper can succeed when his stuff is good, it's more of a question of: can he succeed when his stuff isn't there? In his first year as a starter, Looper admitted after the game that he has to be more consistent and be able to work through outings when he's not at his best. Pirates: Armas will get a second chance in the rotation, with the Pirates once again in need of a fifth starter. Wednesday's start will be the first for Armas since May 17 and his eighth of the season. What began as a subpar few opening months for the right-hander has been turned around as of late. Armas' workload out of the bullpen increased during July, a month in which he allowed just one run in 12 total innings of work. link |
