Re: Pirates @ Phillies July 27-29 John Van Benschoten RHP (0-4, 8.17) Jamie Moyer LHP (8-8, 5.01)Scouting Report: Pirates: Van Benschoten's turn in the rotation was skipped after he had his worst outing of the season last Monday. He gave up nine earned runs on six hits with two walks and two hit batsmen in just two innings of work. Van Benschoten has benefited from extra side sessions from pitching coach Jim Colborn and said he is making good strides in improving his mechanics and command. Phillies: After swapping stories of what life was like in the 1960s, Moyer bested his 44-year-old Padres counterpart, David Wells, to pick up his first win since June 22. Moyer's drought spanned four starts and included three consecutive losses, one of which was an outing against the Dodgers, when he allowed 10 earned runs. But Moyer was more consistent Saturday, lasting 6 2/3 innings and giving up four earned runs. The Phillies offense then provided plenty of offense to back him. Moyer has a 5.22 ERA lifetime against the Pirates after 10 career starts against them. LINK

Re: Pirates @ Phillies July 27-29 Shane Youman LHP (2-2, 3.24) @ J.D. Durbin RHP (2-2, 5.76)Scouting Report: Pirates: Youman pitched easily his best game of the season on Sunday, but lost because the Pirates were shut out by the Astros. Youman dominated throughout, giving up just one earned run on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts in eight innings. He kept the Astros off-balance throughout the game, as he didn't give up an extra-base hit and didn't allow more than one baserunner in an inning until the eighth. Phillies: Cast off by three teams this season, J.D. Durbin has pitched his way into good standing with his fourth organization. The right-hander tossed a five-hit shutout Sunday against the Padres, getting the best of All-Star pitcher Jake Peavy. Durbin had more than one baserunner in an inning once, in the eighth, and allowed only three runners to reach second base. He was helped by two inning-ending double plays. The shutout was the first of Durbin's career and followed an outing against the Dodgers during which he allowed just a run. His ERA has dropped from 13.50 to 5.76 over his past two starts. Link

Re: Pirates @ Phillies July 27-29 July 29th Preview: Ian Snell RHP (7-8, 3.62) Kyle Kendrick (4-1, 4.44)Scouting Report: Pirates: Snell was battered for six runs over four innings against the Mets in his last start -- serving up a homer to pitcher John Maine that sealed his early night. That makes it three losses in three tries after the All-Star break for Snell, whose post-break 9.00 ERA is more than triple his first-half mark of 2.93. He'll try to turn things around against the Phillies, whom he beat twice last year with a sparkling 0.64 ERA. Phillies: The rookie had a typical outing Tuesday against the Nationals, lasting 5 2/3 innings and giving up three runs. His lone hiccup came in the fourth, when he surrendered a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double. It wasn't good enough to leave with the lead, but he got off the hook for the loss an inning later. Kendrick appeared to havee trouble with command at times, walking three. He threw 82 pitches, 46 for strikes. Link

Re: Pirates @ Phillies July 27-29 July 29th Review: Except for a solo home run by Nate McLouth, the Pirates' bats were mostly quiet on Sunday as Pittsburgh dropped the series finale to Philly. Ian Snell gave up three runs over six innings and was tagged with his ninth loss of the year. Link
