Best Pirates of all time

Okay, so with so many "Best of" lists popping up, how about some love for my Bucs? The Pirates have had a ton of great players throughout the years - Roberto Clemente, Honus Wagner, Pops Stargell, Elroy Face and Barry Bonds, just to name a few. So who gets your vote as best ever?

Sorry, dude. While I respect knowing that you once had good taste back in high-school, I can in fact go with someone other than Wagner. Roberto Clemente was far and away the best player in Pirates history. He was a 12-time Gold Glover, and he is one of just four players in MLB history to have at least 10 Gold Gloves and a .300 lifetime batting average. 3,000 hits, a 12-time All-Star, a former NL MVP, a World Series MVP, a four-time NL batting champion, played as many career games as Wagner, hold team records for At Bats, Hits, Total Bases and Singles, and on top of it all was a tremendous humanitarian.

Clemente is the best Pirate ever. He also hit safely in all 14 World Series games he played in and was, to a lesser extent to Latin players what Robinson was to African-Americans. Wagner second and Pie Traynor third.

Ah, vince, I love the mention of Maz. Definitely the most underrated player in Pirates history. Probably the best defensive second baseman of all time - career .983 fielding percentage and led the NL in assists nine times. Worthwhile Hall of Famer, despite the knocks on his hitting. Clemente was better, but I love seeing Maz getting thrown into the discussion because he's a personal favorite. I actually met him - he was signing autographs several years ago when a new Krogers opened at our town. He's a local guy, too, having been born in Wheeling, West Virginia (about an hour from where I live) and owning a golf course in Tiltonsville, Ohio until recently.

I mentioned Pops in the very first post.

He was definitely the leader of the We Are Family Pirates, so that contribution has to be considered as well as his career stats.

I would put Pops on the All-Pirates Team covering first...but realistically he falls short of a few other players ...

Pie Traynor anyone?...the greatest thirdbaseman of his era...and no slouch with the bat...
