Salomon Torres

Pirates closer Salomon Torres got off to such a great start this season, but since then he has struggles mightily. Torres has been scored upon in five of his last seven appearances and has blown three of his last five save opportunities. His ERA's up to 7.20, and he was actually pulled yesterday in a non-save situation after nearly blowing a 5-1 lead. So should the Bucs stick with Torres, or try out Jon Grabow or Matt Capps in the role?

For selfish reasons I like Capps...his rookie cards are not sitting in my discard pile like Salomon Torres ...Torres broke in in the early 90's as a highly rated rookie...and his career as been a bit below average...Capps at least has untested potential...the Pirates are young...so go find out what your young guys can do.

Yeah, I agree... despite the fact that he's on my fantasy team, I think Torres should be replaced. The team needs to find a consistant closer, one with the right attitude. It takes a special kind of pitcher to be a good shut-down closer, and I'm afraid ol' Salomon doesn't have what it takes.

Re: Salomon Torres

For different selfish reasons, I think they need to test Capps at the spot. (I grabbed him in my fantasy league a couple days ago in hopes that he'll become the closer). Torres really doesn't seem to have the closer's mentality though and in a weak NL Central, just getting the right people in the right spot could make all the difference.

You mean like a young Mariano Rivera-type? That would work well.

Who would you recommend as a potential replacement?

I'd like to see Capps get a shot, just to see what he can do. We're still a good distance away from contending, so what not?

Re: Salomon Torres

I would only test new players in September if you have a solid lead.
