Wells suffering from blood clots?

After reporting arm fatigue to Pirates officials, the AP is reporting that Pirates starter Kip Wells met with a vascular surgeon who specializes in blood clots on Saturday. The team was apparently not willing to go into details about the consultation, saying that it was just a precaution. Even though Wells was just 8-18 with a 5.09 ERA last season, the Buccos are counting on him to be one of their core starters. They can't afford to lose him.

Lefty,

You are right, they cannot afford to lose him regardless of his record last season. But how long are the Buccos going to wait around on him to maximize his potential?

I'm not happy about this but at the same time one man's loss may be another man's opportunity. Pitching is one area that the Bucs have depth for sure.

Doesn't sound good for Kip Wells. 100% blockage with that clot. Craig Wilson will be traded for sure.

Yeah, saw the news this morning. A 100% arterial blockage near the right clavicle. If he has surgery, he'll be out for up to eight months. Doesn't look good at all.

Lefty,

They lose Wells and they lose 4 million dollars. What a waste.

Only thing I can say is I hope that this is not how the whole season is going to go. Wells was looking to have a good year, and now it looks like he is not even going to pitch.

At least his life is not in danger. His health is more important than a baseball game.

Re: Wells suffering from blood clots?

The Pirates can release Wells and only be responsible for $700,000. They would save over 3 million dollars. He's a free agent next year anyway.

I release him and trade for Matt Clement.

Re: Wells suffering from blood clots?

BBB,

That sounds good in theory, but is it possible? Would the Buccos be able to lure Clement?

Re: Wells suffering from blood clots?

Below are a couple of articles about the Pirates pitching situation. Good reads...

I hope Burnett can go back to the form that he showed us a couple years ago. He could really help the pitching staff.
