| Re: Penguin's Russian star bolts According to an article in today's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, "Russian hockey sensation Evgeni Malkin said he second-guessed himself just hours after he signed a new contract with his hometown team two weeks ago, triggering a chain of events that led to a clandestine escape to Los Angeles so he could play in the NHL with the Penguins." So he's apparently in L.A. -- or at least he was.

The Penguins should make him honor his contract. Sets a bad precedent for the NHL. |

| Re: Penguin's Russian star bolts You're probably right, but look at the situation the Pens are in financially. They need all the help they can get so they can put a winning franchise on the ice and draw people back to the Igloo. Not that I'm saying Malkin will turn it around, but when you're desperate like this sometimes you need all the help you can get. |

| Re: Penguin's Russian star bolts The Penguins are SALIVATING getting this dude, are you kidding? they'll let him ride his motorbike into their swimming pools, for crying out loud - date their daughters, anything to keep him. He's new blood. Him with Crosby will bring them, they think, into the limelight. |

| Re: Penguin's Russian star bolts Wow, it looks like this kid could spawn a gigantic legal battle between Russia and the NHL. |

| Re: Penguin's Russian star bolts They'll announce malkin is a penguin today. They say he's getting the same as Ovechkin got - $984,200 plus 2.85 million in incentives. Two weeks has passed since Malkin gave notice, so he's free to sign, they say. His russian team is still threatening to sue the NHL. Also noted, Ovechkin's team did the same - tried to sue the League for $$ lost because they signed him to an NHL contract but US District court threw it out, saying they had no jurisdiction over the matter. |

| Re: Penguin's Russian star bolts If he's half as good as Ovechkin, and you add him with Crosby, then all of a sudden you've got a good young nucleus for all of us Penguin fans to start getting a little excited about hockey again. Of course, Pittsburgh sports fans have been burned by promised of improved play before (see: the 2006 Pirates), so I imagine there will be skepticism about this kid Malkin until we see him hit the ice. |

| Re: Penguin's Russian star bolts Apparently a Russian arbitration tribunal has sent a court order to the NHL brass, prohibiting Mlkin from playing. NHL deputy commissioner Bill daly is quoted as saying in the Star, "We are happy to review and consider anything that may be provided to us." Then he reportedly blew his nose in the official Russian document and tossed it in the waste paper basket. |
