| Pittsburgh eliminated So it's all over. Ottawa beat the Pens, 3-0, today to win the series in five games. As the AP says, "Dany Heatley, Antoine Vermette and Chris Kelly scored second-period goals... The Senators scored three times in the middle period and held the 19-year-old Crosby without a point for a second straight game." It was Ray Emery's first career playoff shutout, and the show of futility was a fitting way for the Pens to bow out, I guess. Can't say I'm surprised, but it still stinks.

| Re: Pittsburgh eliminated from sports.espn.go.com: Atlanta Thrashers star Dany Heatley was sentenced Friday to three years of probation and must give 150 speeches about the dangers of speeding after pleading guilty in the death of teammate Dan Snyder in a car accident. HeatleyIn exchange for Heatley's plea, the only felony charge -- first-degree vehicular homicide -- was dropped, as was a charge of reckless driving. "I'm sorry for what I did," Heatley said at the sentencing. "The mistake I made that night was speeding. This mistake will stay with me the rest of my life." He pleaded guilty to second-degree vehicular homicide, driving too fast for conditions, failure to maintain a lane and speeding in connection with the Sept. 29, 2003, car crash in Atlanta that killed his 25-year-old teammate. Snyder's father, Graham, and brother, Jake, both testified that they didn't want Heatley to go to jail or lose his hockey career. The judge took that into consideration. "As a parent, it's hard to explain how you feel about losing your son. My pride in Dan was immeasurable," Graham Snyder said. "We will all miss him. So how do we move on from here? Forgiveness in our hearts has helped us move on. We forgive because Dany has shown remorse to his family." "Dany has a burden that he will carry for the rest of his life," he added. Jake Snyder said in a statement that Heatley was someone his brother counted on. "I know he never intended for this to happen. I don't want to see my friend go to prison, I know Dan would feel the same way," Jake Snyder said. Under terms of his probation, Heatley must give at least 50 public speeches each year about speeding -- nearly a speech a week. The speeches must be given at schools, colleges and public events attended by young people. He also cannot drive except for work and medical purposes or for going to the grocery store or to his speeches. Judge Rowland Barnes also said the court will have to approve the kind of car Heatley drives. The car cannot have more than six cylinders and will have a mechanism to prevent it from exceeding 70 mph. District attorney Paul Howard said he thinks Heatley's sentence is fair. "This was a traffic-related incident," he said. "It was not an intentional incident." Defense attorney Ed Garland said the families believe justice was served. "Yes, he was speeding, and he accepts responsibility for that," Garland said. |

YOU MEAN THERES PLAYERS LIKE THIS ON OTTAWA? well well well this sure comes as a surprise to me i never liked heatley, hate him, and now hes playing hockey with the guilt of a felony on his back! he should be suspended - i think he ruins the image of what the NHL is they cant have players who break the law still play for their respective teams - if they do they crime, they should do the crime and i just hate heatley neway but i mean u dont hear about felons on the sabres, or leafs, or penguins, do u? NO, because theyre all good guys (even if i may not like some of them). ottawa really is a big bunch of bullies, and this only proves it more boo hoo for heatley, he shouldnt be out on the streets, he shouldnt be playing hockey, how can he go through each day knowing he KILLED someone, not to mention, HIS OWN TEAMMATE!?!? but come to think of it, i DO remember something about a car crash and a hockey player being killed a while ago |

| Re: Pittsburgh eliminated You read that article and got mad? I was always really touched by how Snyder's parents handled this. imagine the pain they felt, but they got through it by forgiving heatley, because I really think it's the only way you move forward. heatley isn't some thug or lifetime criminal. he made a horrible mistake and those closest to Dan Snyder dealt with it in an amazing and healthy way. If he was joe Blow on the street, would you be this mad or is it because he is a big bucks hockey player? he doesn't parade it around, that he got away with it. No kid will look at him and think, Hey I want to get away with the same thing he did. heatley is very honest and forthright about his own pain and his own recklessness that caused the death of a very good friend, and I think he is where he is in many ways (and I don't mean 'not in jail') due to the snyders. He is paying for what he did every day, i'm sure, but the way the Syders reacted should be an inspiration for anyone. They are models. |
