Evgeni Malkin - The Next Mario Lemieux?

That's what Mark Recchi's said, comparing the Russian Rookie's speed and instincts to that of the great Super Mario.

Malkin certainly has gotten off to an incredible start. According to the AP, "Malkin is one of only two players in 88 years -- Boston's Dimitri Kvartalnov in 1992-93 was the other -- to score a goal in each of his first five games. Malkin could become the first player since the league's inaugural season in 1917 to score in his first six if he gets a goal against the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night... His Lemieux-like numbers (5 goals, 4 assists, a plus-7 in five games) are a major reason why the Penguins are 6-3, or six more victories than they had at this stage a year ago." Just how good is this kid right now, and how good can he be?

No...he is not Super Mario II...but he might be the reason the Penguins slides into the playoffs...El Sid needed a running mate.

Re: Evgeni Malkin - The Next Mario Lemieux?

Still, he's got a shot to do something tonight that's never been done in the NHL before, if he can score on the Kings. And a plus-7 in his first five games in the league is just insane. I can't help but get the feeling this kid is going to be something very, very special.

so was Jari Kurri and Messier when on the same team with Gretzky...Esposito with Orr etc...His numbers would be down if Crosby was not around. A Mario is the focal point on a team...Malkin a this point is not.

I agree with Gotham here, Malkin is a talented player and playing with Crosby on a line opens up an abundance of oppurtunity for him to use his talent...hes a good supporting player but the center piece of the Penguins he is not

Thus he is no Mario...perhaps the next Jagr?...

Malkin strikes again!

Quote:
NHL - Pittsburgh Penguins/Los Angeles Kings Recap Wednesday November 1, 2006 - Yahoo! Sports
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Evgeni Malkin's first goal Wednesday night was historic. His second was a game winner.

Malkin scored a power-play goal in overtime to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.

Malkin slapped in a loose puck from the slot 2:45 into the extra period to give the Penguins their fifth straight win. The winner came with the Kings' Mattias Norstrom in the penalty box for tripping.

Malkin also scored in the first period, beating Dan Cloutier with a wrist shot, to become the first NHL player in 89 years with goals in his first six games. The 20-year-old Russian joined Joe Malone, Newsy Lalonde and Cy Denneny, who each scored in their first six games during the NHL's inaugural season in 1917-18.
I don't know, guys... Maybe Malkin's Mario and Sid the Kid is Jagr?

Doubt it...Maklin in Kurri to Sid's Gretzky...

Heck Wally Joyner has 21 homers by the All-Star game in 1986...everyone went "Wally World" crazy...finished with 22, and never hit more than 34 in a season...three weeks does not a career make...
