| Al McCoy, "The Voice of the Suns" to Receive an Award You heard it right, Al " The Voice of the Suns" McCoy is going to receive a 2007 Curt Gowdy Media Award in September. He has been " The Voice of the Suns" for 35 years and had dedicated much of his professional career telling the story of basketball for millions of viewers and listeners. He has started his career with the Phoenix in 1972 and has been with the Suns from that time on. The Gowdy Award is just the latest of the awards he's been receiving as a great contributor in the basketball industry. Here is the list of his awards. * Named Best Play-by-Play Announcer by Phoenix Magazine in their annual “Best of the Valley” issue for the eighth consecutive year in 2006. McCoy is the only broadcaster to win the award since it started in 1999. *Honored with a Silver Circle Award from the Arizona chapter of the NationalAcademy of Television Arts & Sciences and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the ArizonaMuseum of Broadcasting. * The first play-by-play announcer to be inducted into the Arizona Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 2004 *Recently honored with the naming of the Al McCoy Media Center at US Airways Center, a newly renovated arena media center slated to open for the 207-2008 season which will chronicle his legendary broadcasting career. This 2007-08 season will mark McCoy’s 36th season with the Suns, the longest tenure with any one team among current broadcasters. He is considered by many to be the dean of all NBA announcers. |
