Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard asked for $18 million in salary arbitration Tuesday, the third-highest figure submitted since the process began in 1974.

Philadelphia offered him $14 million, a raise of $4 million.
Houston's Roger Clemens set the record for highest request in arbitration at $22 million in 2005. Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is second at $18.5 million in 2001.
Milwaukee first baseman Prince Fielder had the second-highest request this year at $8 million. In arbitration for the first time, he was offered $6 million, up from $670,000 last year.
Forty-two players reached agreements Tuesday just before the exchange. Among them were Seattle left-hander Erik Bedard ($7.75 million), Pittsburgh first baseman Adam LaRoche ($7.05 million) and Yankees outfielder Xavier Nady ($6.65 million).
While 111 players filed for arbitration last Thursday, just 46 exchanged figures with their teams. Among them were Baltimore right fielder Nick Markakis, who has a tentative agreement on a $66 million, six-year deal.

Re: Howards asks for 18 million!?

Greed. Phils offer $14M which is what he should get, he just asks for more. He is willing to take $14 but if he gets $18 so much the better. Think this will be his last year for the Phils. If this kid in the minors, Donald I think, who is a gd 2B shows he can play, then they will be moving Utley to 1B and the kid goes to 2B and Howard goes out the door for as much as we can possibly get for him.

I'd give him $16 and shop him when his contract is done.

Re: Howards asks for 18 million!?

I always have said, trade Howard. His demands are starting to get out of hand. How can he even think he deserves more then Pujols??? Yes I realize there are guys out there getting more then Pujols who don't deserve it (Zito, Cabrera, Beltran) but at some point you have to draw a line. If Howard hit .300 and had only 100-125K's I would think about it. But until that happens no way. Get ready to trade him to the AL for a bucket full of prospects.
