Phillies trade rumors

The Phillies may or may not decide to trade Bobby Abreu before the deadline, according to various reports. If a deal is made for the right fielder, the Mets and Yankees are the prime candidates. However, Philadelphia may still opt to hang onto him. I guess it probably depends on the quality of the offers they get, eh?

Re: Bobby Abreu trade rumors

Seems like Abreu or Burrell will be traded is a fact as the Phillies will look to cut payroll. The Yankees really like Abreu but won't trade much to get him. I've read where the Yanks will wait until the Phillies are backed into a corner and attempt to get Abreu on the cheap.

I don't think they'll have any trouble getting rid of Gordon, however, I hope that team isn't the Mets. Gordon is good in the regular season but just sucks it up come playoff time.

Re: Bobby Abreu trade rumors

Now, if I remember correctly, the article I read said that Gordon was available "for a king's ransom". They'll have teams interested in him, but I wonder how much a GM would be willing to pay for an aging yet talented closer.

The Yanks can probably afford to wait this out...but who would the Phillies be willing to take in a trade?...and Burell up for trade as well?...Are the Phillies playing like a small market team?

Re: Bobby Abreu trade rumors

St. Paul Pioneer Press reported the Detroit Tigers are close to a deal with the Phillies for Bobby Abreu. Pundit talked about it in the 'Baseball Trade Rumors' thread in the Baseball forum.

Re: Bobby Abreu trade rumors

Looks like the Orioles might be interested in either Abreu or Pat Burrell, according to the Baltimore Sun: "Hoping to bolster their offense at the non-waiver trade deadline for both the present and the near future, the Orioles have discussed sending starter Rodrigo Lopez to the Philadelphia Phillies for one of their two expensive outfielders, Bobby Abreu or Pat Burrell."

Re: Bobby Abreu trade rumors

Some strange new Phillies trade rumors floating around. Bobby Abreu, Pat Burrell, Tom Gordon and David Bell to the Yankees for Alex Rodriguez, Melky Cabrera and a player to be named later? Abreu for Lastings Milledge of the Mets? Strange stuff. None of these deal will happen, right?

Re: Phillies trade rumors

From SI.com
Quote:
Is there a market for Pat Burrell? Or, for that matter, even Bobby Abreu?

The Yankees' trade proposal for Abreu was a couple of Class A prospects. That, in effect, is scarcely more than an offer to take the $23 million remaining on Abreu's contract.

While Phillies GM Pat Gillick hasn't accepted yet, the Yankees aren't discounting the possibility they'll get Abreu by default at the deadline. The Tigers are supposedly in the market for a left-handed hitter yet have ignored Abreu and appear to be focusing instead on two right-handed hitters, Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Lee, and it's difficult to identify teams interested in Abreu.

Re: Phillies trade rumors

Bobby Abreu is worth more than a couple of first class prospects.

But you never know, those prospects can turn into All-Stars someday.

Re: Phillies trade rumors

Phils must be pretty desperate if they're even considering dumping Abreu or Burrell for Class A players. You've got to get your prospects a little closer to Major League ready than THAT! Any GM who makes that deal better realize he won't be aroudn to see those Class A players ever make the majors.

Re: Phillies trade rumors

Jayson Stark reported on ESPN.com that the Phil's are packaging both Abreu and Lieber in any proposals now. I believe if they can get one of their OFs or one of the pitchers (Lieber, Lidle or Gordon) traded by Monday, it'll be the end of their involvement.

There just doesn't seem to be a large market for Abreu especially. Still, Burrell to St. Louis makes sense.
