Phils Re-sign Scott Eyre

I'm happy to keep him here! That is one down, about 10 more to go!

Re: Phils Re-sign Scott Eyre

Not a bad move for a cheap price..$2M plus incentives. Gives us 2 veteran lefties in the bull-pen. Saw someone make a point, with Howard up for arbitration, does anyone on team deserve more then he does? Especially if he wins a 2nd MVP? So say he gets $15M for next year, no way Burrell can ask for, or expect anything near that. People keep going on about Burrell going to an AL team... but what makes people think he will be a good DH? When ask to do it during inter-league play he has not done well and has said on numerous occasions that he does not like it, or want to do it. So unless he bites the bullet, I don't see anyone offerring him some huge deal. He is 32, with no DH record to go by, he is basically a 7 inning guy (except in close games), prone to streaks. I think the Phils believe that he will not get any great offers and will be willing to come back for a discount. A platoon of Stairs (please he is 41 and runs worse then Burrell)/ Dobbs (no great OF either)/Jenkins (coming off a down year) will not work. They need a RH bat and glad to see Holliday went to Oakland, although people will complain we did not try and get him (although I read the asking price was Happ, Carrasco and Victorino!!) Either go get someone young, like Delmon Young of Minn, or bring Burrell back on a 2 year deal with incentives and performance based options.

I may be late on this (pardon me as I am new), but I was stoked when I saw they re-signed him. His swagger on the mound and his prowess to pitch as a set-up man is a perfect fit between our starters and Romero or Lidge.

So, my question is... do you think they made a good move signing Ibanez and letting Burrel go?

In the end, yes I do. Burell came through in the end, but I think that a more consistent player in that spot will help the team.

The Phils aren't lacking for power in this lineup, and I think less strike outs and a better average will be an asset

I hope that after Ibanez is done, they have someone that can come up and take over that spot. After this contract, he will be an older player, and I want to see this team stay young in the long term, and grow the minor league system.

Re: Phils Re-sign Scott Eyre

I agree that (while I really liked Burrell) he had to go. He was slowing sliding into that "feast or famine" player. He did have a great start and helped carry the team in April and May, but after that he fell off quick. While he is certainly going to have less RBI chances hitting behind Howard, his big claim was his OBP. But that has been slowly sliding and he was turning into a Dunn/Giambi type guy already. His fielding was never that great, nor was it that bad when he was healthy, but it was not going to get better. If he could have hit for a better avg then I would have kept him over Ibanez.. simply because we could use a RH power bat.
