Surhoff coming to Phillies?

I heard earlier today that the Phillies have some interest in B.J. Surhoff.

I think the potential move is interesting, I mean Surhoff has a decent bat and can be a good bench player, and on occassion start.

But, the one thing that does concern me is Surhoff is 41 years old, and his best days are behind him.

So, if the Fightin Phils' go for Surhoff, they need to know that they are getting someone on very limited time.

Jeez, I can't believe he's still in the league! I remember when he first came up -- hard to believe that back in the late 80s. This will be his 21st season, I believe. And just two years ago he hit .300 and drove in 50 runs for Baltimore. Can't wait to see what he's still got left in the tank.

Even though he is old I believe he is a great pickup. I still have a load of his rookie cards in the same year as Will Clark, Jose Conseco, and Barry Bonds. He is a legitimate hitter and although he can't be a full time starter he is a great guy off the bench and not a liability with his defense. Not a bad move for the Phils who had to cut their losses with Thome. His addition won't dethrone the Braves but he was definately a good addition and he was probably had a good price. There is no pricetag on clubhouse leadership and experience.

Re: Surhoff coming to Phillies?

I love BJ Surhoff and I am a huge Phillies fan. I think Surhoff would be a solid addition to the Phils to be a bat off the bench. Having a lefty like Surhoff to pinch hit and also play some outfield and first base occasionally will help.

I don't see him as an everyday starter anymore, but he can still hit the ball for an old man, haha.

I absolutely agree aricoaster. Surhoff would be a welcome addition to our bench. Still a solid hitter, he can also make the occasional spot start. Nunez is a switch hitter (and currently the best hitter on the bench), but a better hitter as a left. Still doesn't hurt to another one.
