Just as quickly as relief pitchers Brad Lidge and Ryan Madson filed for arbitration, the Phillies announced the pair had agreed to one-year deals on Thursday afternoon.
For Lidge, the 31-year old closer acquired from the Houston Astros in November, the agreement means he will earn $6.35 million for the 2008 season, not including performance bonuses.
In 2007, Lidge went 5-3 with 19 saves and a 3.36 ERA in 66 games. The right-hander had the fifth-most strikeouts (8

among all major league relievers and the sixth-highest strikeout ratio (11.82 strikeouts/9.0 innings).
Madson, 27, signed for $1.4 million, not including performance bonuses. Last season the righty went 2-2 with a save and a 3.05 ERA in just 38 games. A left oblique strain and an injured shoulder ended Madson’s season in late July.
In making the deals, the Phillies have just two players eligible for arbitration in infielders Ryan Howard and Eric Bruntlett.
