Phillies Re-Sign J.C. Romero Fox Sports reports the Philadelphia Phillies have re-signed lefty reliever J.C. Romero to a three-year, $12 million deal. A fourth option year is included which "could bring the total value of the deal to $16.75 million." MLB Trade Rumors thinks the signing is bad: "This is a terrible signing. Is it really this hard to find a competent lefty reliever? The Phillies seem to be demonstrating an ignorance of basic pitching statistics. Romero's contract is based on 36 innings...his control is awful - he's walked almost five batters per nine innings in his career. " It's definitely a time where teams sign relievers hoping they get a good year out of them. Relievers are the toughest to predict.

Re: Phillies Re-Sign J.C. Romero You're right, you can never know until the games are played. If he ends up being a good reliever, then nobody will question the money. If he ends up another Geary, people will talk about the contract. That's what today's GMs have to deal with as far as reliever sgo.

Re: Phillies Re-Sign J.C. Romero I have no doubt that the Phil's are over paying for Romero, and I love the move. The way I see it, the Phillies biggest hole is the pen. Romero has such good stuff that despite the walks, gave us an ERA under 2.00. Pitching, especially in this year's weak market, is going to be over valued so I don't see them getting any one better for any less cash. The phils are actually acting like a big market team a little bit.
