Phillies Manager Challenges Writer to Fight After losing to the Mets, 8-1, on Tuesday night, Charlie Manuel was not too happy when a reporter questioned his aggresiveness. Manuel exploded in anger and had to be held back by fellow coaches. AOL Sports Elsewhere, a PhillySportsline writer believes Manuel should be fired. Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci argues doing so would not benefit the team.

If I owned the Phillies, I would fire Manuel while the season is still salvagable. I would hire Frank Robinson. He would be perfect. A no-nonsense guy who would give the team the edge that they lack.

Re: Phillies Manager Challenges Writer to Fight I wouldn't be opposed to that, but who knows how these guys will perform for someone else. I'm so disgusted with this team. I know it's early, but this is just sinful how bad they have played. Pitching, fielding, base running, clutch hitting. It is just stunning. I can't blame Charlie for all that, but that is how it goes. A change is needed, even if it isn't all his fault.

Seriously, if he can't keep his cool with some forgettable radio jockey, then why talk to him in the first place? Even further, the radio guy already had a rep for running a circus show.... it's almost as stupid as Hardaway going on Le Batard's show to talk about gays. Idiots. |

Re: Phillies Manager Challenges Writer to Fight Let me ask you this. If Eskin is so innocent, why did he go to Charlies office, and then give him the stare down? He did it to help his ratings. He instigated the trouble, got what he wanted, then came out with a press release about how unprofessional it was. Now Howard is a victim. This isn't really about the Phillies, this is about Howard Eskin. It's one thing to question his ability to manage. It's another thing altogether to call him a dumb country bumpkin, or any other names. Howard Eskin is always confrontational. In his interviews, on the Sunday night sports show in Philly, (he always argues with the co-hosts and cuts them off), on his radio show. It's the way he does business. He also ran Allen Iverson into the ground during his time here. Anyone interested in hearing his poison can here it on the Internet. Just search 610wip, and listen from 3-7. You don;t have to take anyone else's word for it. It would open up some eyes to what he is really like.

Re: Phillies Manager Challenges Writer to Fight OK, we've established that this Eskin guy is a jerk more along the lines of "shock jock" than "journalist". My point is, what does it say about Manuel when he lets Eskin get to him? He knew who this guy is and what he does, right? Anyone in their right mind would steer very clear of that situation, because no good can come of it. He could've just asked him to leave, and banned him from the premises. Now the entire clubhouse has to deal with Manuel's meltdown and a snake like Eskin comes out on top with publicity and ratings, and further perpetuated the idea that slimes like this are related to the real journalists.

Re: Phillies Manager Challenges Writer to Fight I believe that they should go a round in the ring! I'm sure that both sides are guilty of harrassing the other. As WTF said, Eskin comes up on top and takes a chunk of Manuel's reputation.
