PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The Philadelphia Flyers re-signed top defenseman Joni Pitkanen to a one-year contract Friday.
Pitkanen, their 2002 first-round draft pick, had career highs with 13 goals and 33 assists for 46 points in 58 games for the Flyers last season. He won the Barry Ashbee Trophy as the Flyers' most outstanding defenseman and the Pelle Lindbergh Memorial Trophy as the most improved player for the 2005-06 season. "Joni Pitkanen is a player who made great strides in his development last season and we feel can one day be one of the top defensemen in the league," said general manager Bob Clarke. "His importance to the team is along the same lines as Jeff Carter, Mike Richards and R.J. Umberger and it is a priority for us to make sure that our younger players remain in the organization."

Joni has a great season for the Flyers last year...good to see they signed him up. Here is a team wanting to lock up new players...you got to like that approach.

Just a bit of humor from an old Flyers fan....


A blonde wanted to go ice fishing. She'd seen many books on the subject
and finally getting all the necessary tools together, she headed for the
ice.
After positioning her comfy footstool, she started to make a circular cut
in the ice. Suddenly, from the sky, a voice boomed,
"THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE."

Startled, the blonde moved further down the ice, poured a thermos of
cappuccino, and began to cut yet another hole.

Again from the heaven the voice bellowed,
"THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE."

The blonde, now worried, moved away, clear down to the opposite end of the
ice. She set up her stool once more and tried again to cut her hole.

The voice came once more,
"THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE."
She stopped, looked skyward, and said,
"IS THAT YOU LORD?"

The voice replied, .........
"NO, THIS IS THE MANAGER OF THE HOCKEY RINK
