Eagles Sign Asante Samuel to 6-year Deal

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—The Eagles have signed free-agent cornerback Asante Samuel.

The Eagles agreed to a six-year contract on Friday with Samuel, who spent the last five seasons with New England and had 16 interceptions the last two years.

Samuel also tied the NFL career playoff record with three interceptions returned for TDs

Philadelphia had only 11 interceptions last year and failed to score a defensive touchdown. Its defense had an NFL-worst 19 takeaways.
T
he Eagles will likely trade or shift positions for either Lito Sheppard or Sheldon Brown.

As a Cowboy fan, I have to say that this is really really bad news. Jimmy Johnson's defense is scary enough. I really wish he would have went somewhere else. Preferable in the AFC.

I read that he would be taking Sheppard's place. Not that it makes any diff.

What a bombshell. Just yesterday, I think it was, he was said to be close to a deal with the Saints. Six years, an estimated $57 million, $20 million of it guaranteed... I guess you can't blame the guy. Lurie said the Eagles considered him the best free-agent athlete available; well, kudos to them for going out and getting the guy they wanted.

Not a good move. You are signing a guy to a huge deal.. more then Westbrook, who has been asking for a new deal which the Eagles will not restructure . It is bound to cause problems, mark my words.

They were comparing Sheppards and Samuals numbers, and the Philly guys seem to think Lido is just as good. He was getting his numbers in man to man D setups, where the Pats play a lot of zone.

The carrer numbers are pretty close, but Sheppard has two more years in the NFL. So to me Samuel actually impresses me more, based only on stats. He was 5 more ints, and one more tackle in his 5 years vs Lidos 7.

Sheppard wanted more money, and I think everyone know how the Eagles feel about giving up more money if you have time left on your deal.

We'll see. I think it will be a wash.

Re: Eagles Sign Asante Samuel to 6-year Deal

Now I get it that a guy wants to make as much money as he can. I would too. But then don't say to the press that you just wanted to go somewhere that you had a chance to get to the Super Bowl and get a ring! Uh, wouldn't that have described New England? Does he seriously thinks the Eagles are going to the Super Bowl anytime soon? It is always about the money, and I can understand wanting your family to be set for generations. But please then don't say it's about getting a ring.

The previous post that said this move would have implications on Westbrooks new deal would concern me if I were an Eagles fan.
