McNabb tells HBO that race is an issue at QB position

Donovan McNabb says African-American quarterbacks are perceived differently than white quarterbacks in a wide-ranging interview that will air tonight on HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel." In the conversation, which will be shown at 10 o'clock, McNabb also talks about the pressure of being the quarterback in this city and what it takes to tick him off. At one point, interviewer James Brown asks McNabb about how people perceive him as a quarterback, alluding to the lack of African-Americans at the position because some people thought "they weren't smart enough." "There's not that many African-American quarterbacks, so we have to do a little bit extra," McNabb says. When pressed by Brown, McNabb continues, "Because the percentage of us playing this position, which people didn't want us to play this position, is low, so we do a little extra." -- Philadelphia Daily News

I wish McNabb hadnt said that. African-American quarterbacks have proven themselves time and time again.

What is the diff between Limbaugh bring up race in regards to QB and McNabb bringing it up?...as long as its being brought up, will it really go away?...

Come on, Goth, clearly we all know the answer to that question. It's because Limbaugh's white, and when you're white and you bring up the issue of race - no matter how delicately you try to do it - you're automatically dubbed a racist. Personally, I think it's silly for McNabb to broach the issue now, when there are probably more African-American quarterbacks on rosters now than ever before: Vince Young, JaMarcus Russell, Daunte Culpepper, McNabb himself, Steve McNair, Byron Leftwich, Jason Campbell, Tavaris Jackson, David Garrard, and I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting.

McNabb needs to realize people aren't on his case because he's black, it's because he just isn't playing very good football right now.

See, that's why I didnt like it. It makes it sound like that's somehow an excuse or something as to why fans are on him. Quarterbacks always get the blame. Its not the first time fans have booed their own quarterback.

Wink Re: McNabb tells HBO that race is an issue at QB position

It used to be a racist was someone who did not like black people. Now it is someone who black people don't like. He is playing poorly right now and the Philly fans (who never have liked him) are booing him and letting him know that his play sucks. The fact that he wants to make something more out of it tells me that he is paving the groundwork to leave Philly. He didn't like that the Birds drafted a QB so he has been very bitter all through training camp. It just seems to me that he wants out of Philly because no one is giving him "love", so he will ask for a trade at years end. Probably back home to Chicago I bet.

McNabb should realize that they booed Mike Schmidt in Philly, a Hall of Famer and perhaps the best third baseman ever. Philly fans don't care what color you are. They booed Santa Claus once didn't they?

No we threw snowballs at him and that was 1964. The way every announcer brings that up you would think it happened last week.

Better than not being remembered at all, I say...

Re: McNabb tells HBO that race is an issue at QB position

I heard part of this interview this noon and it would seem that maybe the media bent everything out of shape. It sounded like he just mentioned it in passing in connection with his life and they took it and ran with it. Made it the whole issue of the interview.
McNabb is a wonderful quarterback who is going thru a bad time right now. I have never walked in his shoes so maybe his race has made it harder for him in his position over the years.

Announcers mention everytime that these are the fans that booed Santa. But that was in the old stadium. Maybe these are a little more mellow.

Come on Goth .. it wasn't Rush that lost his job, although I'd be in favor of it.

Re: McNabb tells HBO that race is an issue at QB position

McNabb is getting foot in mouth disease

plenty of QB's get booed because they play bad

Rex got his team to the Super Bowl ...... the week before the game media types and many fans were saying he shouldnt start the game ....... and Donovan thinks he gets no respect

He gets plenty...perhaps if he doesn't miss his receivers wide open in the corner of the end zone...he will get more...
