Defensive tackles Brodrick Bunkley and Montae Reagor, middle linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, strong safety Sean Considine and defensive end Jevon Kearse have altered their weight this offseason for different reasons, and defensive coordinator Jim Johnson is excited about the changes in four of them. If the season started today, Johnson would not be thrilled to see his starting defensive end less than 250 pounds. Kearse was originally 265, but lost about 20 pounds this offseason while recovering from his knee injury two games into the 2006 season. He has done this in order to hasten his recovery by taking the stress off of his knees.
Johnson would like to have Kearse up closer to his weight from last year, yet has confidence in him to keep working to put it back on.
"I think it could be a problem if he keeps going down," Johnson said. "Now, I think his weight is back up a little bit, and hopefully it will be by training camp. I don't want him to get down too light, I think it will be a problem if it gets too light. He just doesn't have any meat on his bones right now. But he's working to gain weight, and he's usually he's going to be up at 245, 250 by training camp and that's something we like to see."
How light is the 6-foot-4 defensive end? Kearse, who recently said he was 245, is more than 10 pounds lighter than Trotter, a linebacker.
However, Trotter is slimming down and is on track to get down to 250 or 255 by the start of the season, a big difference from his weight of 265 at the end of last year. This move should increase his speed and durability.
"I think he's moving much better," Johnson said. "I think that ten pounds he's lost has helped him quite a bit. He's working at it. He knows he needs to keep it down and he's working at it."
Don't forget about strong safety Sean Considine, a guy who Johnson feels also made major strides this offseason, who has also on some muscle to his frame.
"We'd like to get him up to about 215, in that range right there, and hopefully he can hold it," Johnson said. "But, he's strong. I don't want this guy to gain weight to just to gain weight. He's a lot stronger."
As with any year, there will be a lot of competition for some spots on the defense. At cornerback, though, the competition is as healthy as ever.
