Philadelphia Eagles' Kevin Kolb: When Will He Start?

He'll start right away if: A calamity befalls the entire Eagles' depth chart at quarterback, with Donovan McNabb, A.J. Feeley and Kelly Holcomb all unable to play. Andy Reid wouldn't have used his first pick on Kolb if he didn't expect him to start some day, but that day will not come in 2007.

He'll hold the clipboard if: The Eagles are anything short of abysmal in 2007. The only way he could drop the clipboard and put on the helmet is if McNabb gets hurt and they're mathematically eliminated by December.

Most likely scenario: Kolb will show promise in the preseason but also make typical rookie mistakes. The first time McNabb has a bad game, some fickle Philly fans will remember the promise, forget the rookie mistakes, and call for Kolb. Reid will wisely ignore them.

Projected first start: Mid-season 2008. This year Kolb will be the third-stringer. Next year he'll be promoted to second-string, and McNabb will get hurt at some point, giving Kolb the starting job. If he's as good as some folks think he is, he might never relinquish it.

I said 2009 or later... I just don't think he'll be ready till then. That's not necessarily and endorsement of McNabb.

I agree with you guys. I had the pleasure of having the team to face Kolb in his last game at Houston. Man, what a QB! Gamecocks were lucky to win that game. The system they run is very exciting to watch...

This was an interesting draft pick for the Eagles who took Kolb very early in the draft. It's either to have some good depth behind McNabb or perhaps he will take over at some point over the next couple of years.

But McNabb has been hurt a lot in recent times so I can see him playing this year. Will he start? Perhaps.
