Eagles Put Their Wild-Card Chances on Garcia?s Arm
New York Times, United States - 8 hours ago
PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 6 — Some call it parity. Others call it mediocrity. But in the National Football Conference, where only the division leaders are above .500, an 8-8 record might be good enough to make the playoffs.

This is not a unique situation, but it is unusual. Since 1990, when the National Football League went to its current playoff format, six 8-8 teams have made the postseason. Minnesota and St. Louis were the last teams to do so in 2004.

Re: Eagles QB Jeff Garcia

Garcia wasn't lights-out yesterday (15-23, 164 yds, 2 TDs) but he did get the job done, and Philly won again. Can he take the Eagles to the playoffs?

Those are good stats no matter how you cut it...but I think playoff defenses will take him apart.

Cool Re: Eagles QB Jeff Garcia

I lost that game by 1/2 pt in the pick the points pool. The Redskins should have gone for it with couple of minutes left instead of kicking a FG. They were down on the 3 yard line. What did they have to lose? Gibbs can take a book out of Sean Payton's book. Play to win the game.

Re: Eagles QB Jeff Garcia

Kicking a field goal on the three? I must admit that it is safe, but not something that I would do.

Jeff Garcia had a decent game, but nothing special.

Also, the Eagles aren't a championship team.

Re: Eagles QB Jeff Garcia

But is there any team in the NFC that is championship worthy?? Bears are arguably the best and they have a big question mark at QB. Eagles at least control their future.. win out and they are in the playoffs... and then everything becomes different.

Welcome to GoTeamsGo, njpsufan, and thanks for joining us!

At this point, I'd say the Eagles have a good shot at the Wild Card, but as far as a title run, I'm just not convinced they have the personnel at the skill positions to seriously challenge for the Lombardi Trophy. Now, as far as an NFC team that IS championship worthy? Well, I think you have to start with Chicago and New Orleans - the Bears for their defense and the Saints for their offense.

The Saints with Brees destroyed Dallas who was looking mighty good themselves...you gotta start thinking they are going to go a bit far inthe playoffs...

Re: Eagles QB Jeff Garcia

Well the Bears D took a hit losing Tommie Harris for the year. That is gonna have an effect on their D-line rotation.... not earth shattering but for a team that has lived on their D either keeping them in games or winning them it is enough. Chicago has given up only 177 pts all yr.. the next closest is 79 pts higher! Lead the league in takeaways. Let's face it.. their D is awesome... its like an old Buddy Ryan D! hahaha. As far as N.O., 5 of the wins are agst teams with losing records. They lost to the Squealers, giving up huge yds on the ground. Then gave up huge yds in the air in a loss to Cincy the next week. Now that may not amount to a hill of beans but I just think the NFC has a couple gd teams, with big holes. If just one team can get hot, they can do it all. To me Garcia is the kind of QB that does not win games... he just doesn't lose them, i.e. Tom Brady. However we have to start driving the ball. The quick TD is great but we need to give the D time to rest. The G-men are very beatable, so are the Cowgirls and the Falcons. We just need to start playing the team game and its ours to win.

Like old times
Jackson Clarion Ledger, MS - 57 minutes ago
PHILADELPHIA — In what he thought might be his final season, 36-year-old quarterback Jeff Garcia is showing he and the Philadelphia Eagles have more football left than anyone imagined.

Garcia has almost magically regained his Pro Bowl form from early this decade in replacing injured superstar Donovan McNabb and leading the Eagles (8-6) on a three-game winning streak that gives them a shot at the NFC East title.

"I really feel something special is taking place right here, right now, for me," says Garcia, on his fourth team in four years after flourishing with the San Francisco 49ers in the post-Joe Montana/Steve Young era.

How special will become clearer Monday, when the Eagles meet controversial ex-teammate Terrell Owens and the Dallas Cowboys (9-5) at Texas Stadium in a game with playoff significance.

Re: Like old times

Garcia continues to get praise for the job he's done in McNabb's absence. Any shot of a QB controversy brewing in Philly? I mean, Garcia is 36, so he's not a long term answer... but the team has performed extremely well with him under center. Could Andy Reid possibly consider giving him the reigns in '07 as well?

Re: Eagles QB Jeff Garcia

No chance. They signed McNabb to a big deal awhile ago. Even Garcia knows he is the man. But... this is the 3rd time in 4 yrs that McNabb has been hurt. To me, they need to draft their next QB this draft. That way the guy can hold the clipboard next yr or two, then you can make a decision on McNabb.

So, are you saying that McNabb's future is dim?

Re: Eagles QB Jeff Garcia

I am saying that everything depending on McNabb's return... which could be anywhere between 9-12 months. Philly will resign Garcia as protection, but if McNabb is healthy he gets the nod. If he is out for the year then Garcia plays. Either way I see them drafting a QB for the future. McNabb has 3 years left in my mind.
