• The Philadelphia Eagles delivered a harsh lesson to a young 49ers team and first-year head coach Mike Nolan a year ago, routing them 42-3 in a blowout that started the 49ers' downfall last season. But the 49ers appear to have upgraded their personnel and gained maturity since the teams' last meeting. They will be looking to build momentum after last week's victory over the St. Louis Rams, and trying to gauge their progress with their performance against a team that's tied with Indianapolis for the best record in the league (66-32) since 2000. But the Eagles could be vulnerable. They blew a 24-7 lead in last week's overtime loss to the New York Giants, and they're limping into Monster Park, having lost Jevon Kearse to a season-ending knee injury. Running back Brian Westbrook (knee) is questionable, and tight end L.J. Smith (shoulder) is probable. Donovan McNabb still will pose a severe test for a 49ers defense that is beginning to exert more pressure but remains vulnerable. McNabb and the New York Jets' Chad Pennington are the only NFL quarterbacks to throw for 300 yards in their first two games. For the 49ers, left tackle Jonas Jennings returns after missing last week with an ankle injury. Left guard Larry Allen remains sidelined with a knee problem and will be replaced by Adam Snyder, who played left tackle last week. The 49ers offensive line has held up despite some injuries, and if it can keep that up, the 49ers and Alex Smith could take advantage of a banged up Eagles secondary. The game also features the return of some familiar faces. Cornerback Joselio Hanson, who played with the 49ers in 2004, could start in place of the injured Lito Sheppard and Roderick Hood. Former 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia also returns as McNabb's backup, and former 49ers offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg is in a similar capacity with the Eagles. FEELING THE HEAT
• JONAS JENNINGS: After missing last week's game with an ankle injury, Jennings returns to play left tackle for the 49ers. He'll have the job of protecting Alex Smith's blind side from the Eagles, who have the most prolific pass rush in the league with 13 sacks.
• DONTE STALLWORTH: With two of the Eagles' offensive threats hurting, the pressure will be on Stallworth to take on an even larger play-making role. Running back Brian Westbrook (knee) is questionable, and tight end L.J. Smith (shoulder) is probable. KEYS TO VICTORY
• 1. The 49ers' revamped secondary has shown improvement, but its coverage will have to be tighter still to beat the Eagles. Donovan McNabb has thrown for more than 300 yards in each of his first two outings, and he's going against a secondary that has given up four touchdown passes.
• 2. For the second straight week, a reshuffled offensive line has to come through for the 49ers to give them a chance to win by fending off Philadelphia's furious pass rush. The Eagles' have a league-leading 13 sacks, but they did suffer a major blow last week when a knee injury ended Jevon Kearse's season.
• 3. Sustaining offensive momentum and finishing drives will be critical for the 49ers to keep the ball away from Philadelphia's No. 1 ranked offense. That means they must be more productive on third down, where they've managed a 23.9 percent conversion rate. Only Washington, Carolina and the Raiders are worse. Okay now...are the 49ers D going to be able to take on the Eagles?...I have Donte on my fantasy teams...and I have benched hin in two early games...time to break the kid out...can he make it three good games in a row? |
