Re: Penn State Football: Williams' injury has bright spot after all

Good article by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.

"Williams enters his sophomore season, he has learned one more thing about vision... the five games he spent on the sideline in 2005 gave him a new perspective," writes sports reporter Chico Harlan. "They forced him to watch his teammates' mistakes and scrutinize his film-watching ability. They allowed him to listen to coaches, play by play. They explain, collectively, Williams' optimism about the upcoming season... he figures to grow into Penn State's most dominant offensive player."

How good will Williams be in 2006? Perhaps even a dark-horse Heisman candidate?

PSU Football: WR Williams gets back on track
Pittsburgh Post Gazette, PA - 6 hours ago
Penn State sophomore receiver Derrick Williams scored three touchdowns last season, the same number as backup quarterback Daryll Clark and only one more than cornerback Tony Davis. For a player who came to the Nittany Lions with so much hype as the No. 1 recruit in the country, Williams has had a hard time fulfilling the expectations that were there since arriving in Happy Valley.

Varying reasons were given for Williams' lackluster 2006 performance. Some said he appeared slower and not as elusive as he had been as a freshman. Others blamed to coaching staff for not utilizing his talents the right ways. Whatever the case, Williams set out this winter to improve his speed and athleticism by running track with the Nittany Lions' track team in February and March.

Re: PSU Football: WR Williams gets back on track

What a difference a year makes. Heading into last season, Williams was thought to be a possible Heisman contender. But he has a very disappointing 2006 campaign, and now he's looking to ressurect his career. So what should we expect out of the Penn State WR in 2007?

Who will be throwing to him?...and what does the running back situation look like?...There will be a lot of factors playing into what he does this year.
