Penn State latches onto lofty goal

It is 20 seasons and counting since Penn State last won a national championship in football.

The interim period has been two decades of mostly winning, often spectacular football, including a 12-0 season and national runner-up finish in 1994. That was before the advent of the Bowl Championship Series and the mandated 1-2 matchup for the national title.

As recently as 2005, the Lions finished 11-1, won the Orange Bowl and wound up third in the final polls.

But the pursuit of a third title ring for Joe Paterno, to match those won in 1982 and 1986, remains unfulfilled.

The 80-year-old Paterno has spoken openly of wanting to win another national championship before he retires, or to coach an unbeaten team in a fifth decade. He's already had unbeaten teams in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

So, will Joe Paterno get his third NCAA football title before he retires? I voted no. As much as I'd like to see him win the BCS championship and ride off into the sunset, I just can't see it happening. What do you think?
