Woeful Penn State doesn't draw, either

The Penn State men's basketball team has lost 11 in a row, is 1-11 in the Big Ten in coach Ed DeChellis' fourth season and has a game at No. 2 Ohio State tonight.

Fan apathy should be high on the long list of concerns the Penn State administrators have about their basketball program. Penn State football fans are as passionate as just about any in America and routinely turn out 110,000 strong for games at Beaver Stadium. Not so with the school's basketball fans, few that there are. Penn State basketball long has been irrelevant in Happy Valley.

It's safe to say ESPN 1250 isn't thrilled about having the local radio broadcast rights to the Penn State games. If the Pittsburgh all-sports station wants Penn State football, it has to take on the burden of carrying the basketball. The ESPN people think so little of Penn State basketball that, earlier this season, they cut away from the games late to go to their staff-produced postgame show for the NHL's Penguins.

I saw the Illinois game the other night, man we were close to pulling off the upset. Oh well, I like what the new coach is putting together. Give it a few years, they will be contenders.

Create mood, fans will come

A huge billboard outside the doors of the arena displayed more color photos of the women's and men's seniors. And before the game started, easels displaying framed jerseys worn by Roderick Wilmont, Earl Calloway and Errek Suhr were placed on the court. They were introduced with their families, and the roar of the crowd and the message the fans sent to those three young men was unanimous, "You're the best and we're so proud of you."

I couldn't help thinking this is the atmosphere I and so many others want at Penn State. This is the atmosphere our team deserves to have each and every game. This is the atmosphere that we need for recruits to see first hand ... for them to realize that Penn State is not just a "football school," but basketball is taken very seriously and the university and the community are behind it 100 percent. Create the atmosphere and they will come to play at Penn State.
