Salem High School's Chima Okoli completed a whirlwind football recruiting ride when he said Friday he has picked Penn State over Virginia Tech.
Internet message boards were buzzing this week about Okoli, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound defensive lineman, and coaches from both schools paid him visits this week to make a final push.
"I just liked how Penn State develops defensive linemen, and to play for Joe Paterno, there's no comparison," Okoli said Friday. "I have a deep respect and appreciation for Virginia Tech, but my chance for development and playing was better at Penn State. They played four freshmen on their defensive line last year."
Okoli was a virtual unknown in recruiting circles before his junior season, and he missed several games last year while in Nigeria for nine months as part of an independent studies program.
As a senior, Okoli helped Salem to the school's first Group AAA Division 6 state semifinal appearance. He led the Sun Devils with 12 sacks.
