Notre Dame loss a "learning experience"

Interesting article here about Penn State's loss to Notre Dame this weekend.

Football: Young Penn State looking at lopsided Notre Dame loss as learning experience
By Ray Fittipaldo, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Experienced teams don't make numerous careless mistakes.

And, when presented with opportunities, they capitalize on the miscues of their opponents.

Inexperienced football teams tend to make more mistakes and are often incapable of overcoming their own misfortune.

Such was the difference between Penn State and Notre Dame Saturday. The Fighting Irish are not blessed with more talent than the Nittany Lions, but with second-and third-year players starting at almost every position they clearly had an advantage over Penn State's many rookie starters who struggled with being in a big-game atmosphere for the first time.

Penn State made a year's worth of mistakes in the first half alone against Notre Dame, and the Fighting Irish more than happily took the opportunity to lay the wood to the Lions, 41-17.
A learning experience, eh? Well, I guess in a lot of ways it was. And hopefully Anthony Morelli and company learned not to make so many dumb mistakes. How well do you guys expect the Nittany Lions to rebound after this sound thrashing?

Best to get rid of all the mistakes in one fell swoop...and move on...better than spreading them over 3 more losses...I rather leave them in the toughest match up of the year, then have them haunt me all year.

Re: Notre Dame loss a "learning experience"

The common thread running through all the Penn State forums on the game last week is that mistakes cost them. I agree that mistakes contributed to the loss, but you have to remember. it was 41-3 at one point. Penn State scored 2 TDs only when ND put their second team in. ND led (although not by much) in offense, first downs, time of possession, plays from scrimmage, etc. I think they were outplayed and outcoached as well.
